City streets, sidewalks, and public events: Anything placed in a public street or sidewalk area, and any event that closes one, needs the City's approval first. Start that conversation well before your delivery date, and your account manager can get you the current contact and help you time it.
State highways: Work inside a state highway right-of-way needs a Caltrans encroachment permit, applied for through the state's online permit system. Caltrans treats a street festival or community activity as an encroachment in its own right, so an event that spills onto a state route is handled the same way.
Food vendors: An event coordinator files one packet, covering the coordinator application and every food vendor, with San Mateo County Environmental Health at least 14 calendar days before the event, or 21 days when 20 or more vendors are coming. Permits from other health agencies are not accepted, and a vendor caught operating without one is shut down and the coordinator is billed a penalty.
What the County expects on site: The site map must show toilets with handwashing, and each handwashing setup needs warm water between 100 and 108 degrees with a hands-free spigot. The County office is at 2000 Alameda de las Pulgas in San Mateo, and the number is 650-372-6200.
