A unit on your own driveway, back garden, or fenced job site does not need municipal approval. Public ground does, and Princeton has a clear route for each case.
Streets and sidewalks: The Engineering Department takes an Application for Permit to Excavate or Occupy Right of Way online. Occupying the right-of-way is exactly what a unit parked at the curb does, so start there before the delivery is scheduled.
Public events: The Clerk's Office handles the Public Assembly and Event Permit, along with parade and noise permits. Town events, street closures, and organized gatherings all run through that office.
Parks: Only certain picnic and pavilion sites can be reserved, among them Community Park South, Greenway Meadows, Grover Park, Marquand Park, Smoyer Park, and Turning Basin. Requests should go in at least 14 days ahead, all organized group use needs approval in advance, and organizations have to carry insurance naming the Recreation Department.
State highways: Route 1 and Route 206 are state roads. Placing anything in that right-of-way calls for an NJDOT highway occupancy permit, even when the placement is short term.
Food vendors: Princeton's Health Department runs its own Temporary Event food application, which sits alongside the state retail food rules. Every food stand must give its workers easy access to a toilet, so plan a handwashing station for each vendor.
