What Changes the Price in Birmingham, AL

Here's what changes the price of a Birmingham dumpster.

Size sets the base. Picking one size up usually costs less than a second trip when the first container overflows.

Weight is the next factor. Old plaster, brick, and hardwood flooring from older homes are heavy. A load of them can use up the included weight before the container looks full.

The City runs its own landfills and charges haulers by the ton. Haulers based inside the city pay a lower rate than those coming from outside it. Every contractor and commercial carrier also needs a City landfill user permit before dumping.

Curbside pickup won't handle a remodel. The City tells contractors they can't leave renovation debris on the right-of-way for City crews. It has to be hauled to a permitted landfill, and a roll-off dumpster is the easiest way to do that.

What Size Dumpster Do I Need in Birmingham, AL?

Think about how much debris you have and how heavy it is. Our containers range from 10 to 40 yards.

The 10-Yard Dumpster fits a bathroom remodel, a small porch tear-off, or a basement cleanout. It's the right choice for brick, block, and concrete.

The 15-Yard Dumpster covers a garage cleanout, a flooring job, or a roof on a small house. It's a handy middle size.

The 20-Yard Dumpster is popular in Birmingham for kitchen remodels and whole-house rehabs. It holds cabinets, drywall, and furniture from several rooms.

The 30-Yard Dumpster suits large renovations, additions, and new homes. It handles a lot of mixed debris from bigger jobs.

The 40-Yard Dumpster is our largest size. It's made for commercial builds, demolition, and big warehouse or office cleanouts.

Your account manager can help you choose a size that fits the job.

Do I Need a Permit for a Dumpster in Birmingham, AL?

A dumpster on private property, like your driveway or a job site, usually doesn't need a City permit. If it has to sit on a street or sidewalk, check with the City first.

The Birmingham Department of Transportation manages permits for anything placed in the public right-of-way. Its permits include street blockage permits and temporary traffic control permits for barricades. A container that blocks a lane or sidewalk will likely need one of them.

The City doesn't post a separate dumpster fee online. Call the temporary traffic control permit line at 205-254-2461, or visit the department's walk-in hours on the ninth floor of City Hall.

Your account manager can help you work out which permit applies and find the right contact.

What Can You Not Put in a Dumpster in Birmingham, AL?

Most construction and household debris is fine to load. The limits come from Alabama's landfill rules and the City's own landfill policies.

Under Alabama's landfill rules from the Alabama Department of Environmental Management, regulated hazardous waste and free liquids can't go into ordinary landfills. Whole tires can't be buried after 2027 unless they're cut up first.

The City's landfills also refuse paint, oil, gas, and other liquids. They won't take hazardous waste, pressurized tanks, fluorescent bulbs, batteries, small engines, appliances with refrigerant, or ammunition. Solvents and asbestos can't go in a standard dumpster either.

Keep tires separate and mention them when you book. If you're not sure about an item, ask your account manager before loading it.

What Can I Throw in a Dumpster Rental?

Household Debris Approved for Dumpster Rentals

Construction and Heavy Debris Accepted for Dumpster Rentals

If the item you want to dispose of isn’t on this list, give us a call for more guidance or check out our guide of what you can throw in a dumpster.

*Approved items may vary by location. Always check your local laws and regulations to avoid any fines or additional fees.

Where Your Waste Goes

The City's illegal dumping page sends contractors to the New Georgia Landfill with two forms, a landfill user permit and a waste stream certification. That's where most construction loads from Birmingham go.

The New Georgia Landfill is at 2500 47th Avenue North, Birmingham, AL 35207. It's open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and closed on weekends and City holidays. It has separate areas for household waste and construction debris.

The City also runs the Eastern Area Landfill at 2787 Alton Road, Birmingham, AL 35210, which opens Saturday mornings too. Your account manager will confirm where your load is headed and explain the fees before delivery.

How Fast Can You Get a Dumpster in Birmingham, AL?

Most Birmingham rentals can be scheduled within one to two business days, with delivery arriving in a 24 to 48 hour window. Booking a few days ahead gives you time to sort out a street permit if you need one.

A few tips for a smooth delivery:

  • Tell us what's going in. Brick, plaster, and roofing all affect size and weight.
  • Call early. Morning calls give you the best chance at a next-day slot.
  • Check the drop spot. Pick a level spot with room for the truck, and watch for low wires.
  • Handle the permit first. If the container needs the street, contact the Department of Transportation before delivery.
  • Tell us when you're finished. Your account manager will set up a quick pickup.

Keep the landfill schedule in mind, too. The New Georgia Landfill is closed on weekends, so a container filled on Friday afternoon may not be hauled until Monday.

Birmingham, AL Dumpster Questions

How much does a dumpster rental cost in Birmingham, AL?

In Birmingham, dumpster rentals run from $399 to $499 for a 10-yard container up to $699 to $899 for a 40-yard, based on a five-day rental. Debris weight and City landfill fees shape the final price. Your account manager confirms the included tonnage and overage rates when you book.

Is it cheaper to rent a dumpster or go to the dump?

Residents can drop small loads of household items at the City's Eastern Area Landfill. Renovation debris is another story. Contractors need permits and pay by the ton, and a remodel takes many trips. For most projects, one dumpster costs less and saves time.

Will a couch fit in a 10-yard dumpster?

Yes. A three-seat couch fills roughly a fifth of a 10-yard dumpster. There's still room for a mattress, a table, and bags of clutter. Furniture takes up space long before it reaches the weight limit.

When renting a dumpster, what can you not put in it?

Leave out hazardous waste, liquids, paint, oil, gas, solvents, and asbestos. The City's landfills also refuse batteries, fluorescent bulbs, small engines, pressurized tanks, and appliances with refrigerant. Keep tires separate and mention them when you book.

What is the cheapest dumpster I can rent in Birmingham, AL?

The 10-yard dumpster is our lowest priced size, at $399 to $499. It's great for small jobs. Heavy debris like brick or concrete can hit the weight limit quickly, so keep dense material in its own load to avoid overage fees.

How much is it to rent a dumpster for 3 days?

A three-day rental usually costs the same as a five-day rental, since we price by the job. The weight of your debris affects your bill more than the number of days. Ask your account manager how much weight is included before delivery.

What can you legally put in a dumpster?

You can load lumber, drywall, roofing, flooring, carpet, cabinets, furniture, and household junk in a Birmingham dumpster. Brick and concrete are allowed as well, though they belong in a smaller container. If you're unsure about an item, check with your account manager.
