On private ground, a driveway, a back yard, or a fenced job site, you won't normally need a city permit. Public space in Ann Arbor is permitted closely.
Sidewalks and public space: Anyone occupying public space for vending, seating, or any other public use has to get a sidewalk occupancy permit first, through the city's online portal. An annual permit costs $1.00 per square foot for the June to May year, and a daily permit is $0.05 per day per square foot. You'll need a general liability certificate naming the city, a photo or scaled drawing of the setup, and a health department certificate if food is involved.
What the permit demands: A clear pedestrian walkway at least six feet wide has to stay open, and neighboring businesses get at least 72 hours of notice before the permit is issued. The city also publishes a stadium events restriction map, so check it before planning anything downtown on a home game weekend.
Park events: Parks and Recreation treats a booking as a special event when you're charging admission, bringing large tents or food trucks, running amplified sound, closing a sidewalk or street, holding a race or tournament, or using a downtown park. State roads: Where your spot sits on a state trunkline, the permit runs through MDOT rather than the city, and the sidewalk permit page says so directly. University frontage goes to the university's own sidewalk contact.
Food vendors: In Michigan, the county licenses temporary food stands rather than the state. Washtenaw County's environmental health office is the place to start, and the rules expect toilets your food workers can reach through every hour of service.

Level, firm footing comes first. A unit set on a slope feels unsteady, and low ground along the Huron and Allen Creek stays soft for days after heavy rain.
Give the truck an honest approach. We need room to pull alongside and clearance overhead, which is worth thinking about in Kerrytown alleys and on narrow streets with cars parked both sides. On a job site, keep units within about 200 feet of the work so the crew doesn't lose its break walking.
