What Changes the Price in Anchorage, AK

Here's what shapes the cost of a dumpster in Anchorage.

Size is the starting point. A bigger container costs more, but one that's too small can mean paying for a second haul.

Weight counts because the Municipality charges commercial loads by the ton. Its 2026 disposal rates list $89.36 per ton at the Anchorage Regional Landfill and $104.25 per ton at the Central Transfer Station, plus small surcharges. The same load costs less to dispose of at the landfill in Eagle River than at the midtown transfer station.

Certain items add a charge on their own. Refrigerators and freezers carry a refrigerant removal fee and a disposal fee, and they must arrive empty with the doors off. Let us know about them when you book.

Anchorage's trash rules can also affect the job. In much of the city, collection runs through the Municipality's own system, which we cover in the permit section below.

What Size Dumpster Do I Need in Anchorage, AK?

Choose a size by thinking about the amount of debris and how heavy it is. Prime Dumpster offers containers from 10 to 40 yards.

The 10-Yard Dumpster is right for a bathroom remodel, a small room cleanout, or yard debris after spring breakup. It's also the best pick for gravel, concrete, or dirt, since heavy loads reach the weight limit before the container fills.

The 15-Yard Dumpster covers a garage or shed cleanout, a deck removal, or a small roof. It adds room without a big price jump.

The 20-Yard Dumpster is a popular size in Anchorage for whole-house cleanouts and remodels that cover several rooms. Most home projects fit.

The 30-Yard Dumpster works for major renovations, new homes, additions, and demolition with mixed debris.

The 40-Yard Dumpster is the largest we rent. It's built for commercial construction, large demolition, and big property cleanouts.

Tell your account manager about the project, and they'll help you choose a size.

Do I Need a Permit for a Dumpster in Anchorage, AK?

A dumpster on private property, such as your driveway or a job site, generally doesn't need a permit in Anchorage. You'll need one if the container sits in a street, alley, sidewalk, or other municipal right-of-way.

The Municipality's code covers using a public place, including leaving materials there, and the permit comes from the Development Services Department. Its Right-of-Way Permit Section is at 4700 Elmore Road. Call 907-343-8240 to ask what your placement needs and how long review takes, since no review time is published.

Anchorage also has its own rules on who collects trash. Inside the Solid Waste Services service area, which covers the former City of Anchorage, the Municipality's code requires residents and businesses to use the municipal collection system. Outside that area, collection runs through companies certificated by the state. Before we book, your account manager will confirm how these rules apply at your address.

What Can You Not Put in a Dumpster in Anchorage, AK?

Most construction, roofing, and cleanout debris can go in your container. Alaska's landfill rules and the Municipality's facilities set the limits.

Alaska requires every permitted landfill to post a sign at its entrance saying that regulated hazardous waste and PCB waste can't be dumped there. That means hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, batteries, propane tanks, and asbestos stay out of a standard dumpster.

The Municipality adds its own limits. Land clearing waste, medical waste, liquid waste, hot tubs, and commercially collected refrigerators aren't accepted at the Central Transfer Station or the Girdwood Transfer Station. The Municipality also recommends taking construction and demolition debris to a local recycler for shredding.

Household hazardous waste has a separate route. Residents can drop it at the municipal facilities, and the first 40 pounds is free.

If you're unsure about an item, check with your account manager before it goes in.

What Can I Throw in a Dumpster Rental?

Household Debris Approved for Dumpster Rentals

Construction and Heavy Debris Accepted for Dumpster Rentals

If the item you want to dispose of isn’t on this list, give us a call for more guidance or check out our guide of what you can throw in a dumpster.

*Approved items may vary by location. Always check your local laws and regulations to avoid any fines or additional fees.

Where Your Waste Goes

Most dumpster loads from Anchorage end up at the Anchorage Regional Landfill, 15500 E. Eagle River Loop Rd, Eagle River, AK 99577, near the Glenn Highway and Hiland Road. The Municipality's Solid Waste Services runs it. It's open Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and it's closed Sunday.

Some loads go first to the Central Transfer Station in midtown, where commercial trucks use the entrance at 1050 E. 56th Ave. It's open to commercial loads Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Waste there is loaded into trailers and trucked to the landfill. The Municipality's disposal page lists both sites. Call 907-343-6250 with questions.

Your account manager will confirm which site your load goes to and explain the disposal fees before delivery.

How Fast Can You Get a Dumpster in Anchorage, AK?

Most Anchorage dumpster rentals can be scheduled within one to two business days, with drop-off in a 24 to 48 hour window. Booking a few days ahead gives you time to sort out any street permit and confirm the collection rules for your address.

These tips help delivery go smoothly:

  • Tell us about the load. Your debris type and rough weight help us give you an accurate quote.
  • Call early in the day. Summer slots fill fast, and a morning call gives you the best shot at next-day delivery.
  • Clear and level the spot. Plow snow or chip ice in winter, move vehicles, and check for low wires or branches.
  • Handle the street permit first. If the container must sit in the right-of-way, contact the Right-of-Way Permit Section before you pick a date.
  • Book the pickup. Let your account manager know when you're finished so they can schedule a quick pickup.

The landfill and transfer station are both closed on Sundays. A container filled over the weekend may wait until Monday to be emptied.

Anchorage, AK Dumpster Questions

How much does a dumpster rental cost in Anchorage, AK?

In Anchorage, dumpster rentals run from $399 to $499 for a 10-yard container up to $699 to $899 for a 40-yard container, based on a five-day rental. Debris weight and the Municipality's disposal fees also affect your total. Your account manager confirms tonnage and overage rates.

Is it cheaper to rent a dumpster or go to the dump?

For bigger jobs, a dumpster usually costs less. Household loads at the municipal sites are priced per trip and limited in size, so a large cleanout can take many visits, plus fuel and time. With a dumpster, you load at your own pace, and we haul everything away at once.

Will a couch fit in a 10-yard dumpster?

Yes. A three-seat couch takes up about a fifth of a 10-yard dumpster. You'll still have room for a mattress, a couple of chairs, and a stack of boxes. Furniture is bulky but light, so you'll usually run out of space before hitting the weight limit.

When renting a dumpster, what can you not put in it?

Leave out hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, batteries, propane tanks, and asbestos. Alaska landfills post signs banning hazardous and PCB waste. Hot tubs and refrigerators need special handling in Anchorage, so mention them, and any land clearing debris, when you book.

What is the cheapest dumpster I can rent in Anchorage, AK?

The 10-yard dumpster has the lowest price, at $399 to $499. Your final cost still depends on weight, since commercial loads are charged by the ton. Gravel, concrete, or shingles can push a small container over its limit, so keep heavy material in its own load when you can.

How much is it to rent a dumpster for 3 days?

A three-day rental generally costs the same as our standard five-day rental. We price by the job, not the day, and the weight of your debris affects the bill more than the rental length. Ask your account manager about included tonnage and the rate for extra tons.

What can you legally put in a dumpster?

Most household and building debris is allowed, including lumber, drywall, roofing, flooring, cabinets, furniture, and general junk. Clean gravel and concrete can go in too, though they're heavy. Land clearing waste needs its own plan in Anchorage, so ask your account manager before loading stumps or brush.
