Dumpster Rental in Charleston, West Virginia

At Prime Dumpster, we provide roll-off dumpster rentals across Charleston, West Virginia, and the surrounding Kanawha Valley in sizes from 10 to 40 yards. The hillside streets of South Hills and the older blocks on the East End and West Side keep a steady run of roof, porch and kitchen work going, and downtown construction and office turnover add commercial jobs on top of that. A roll-off container is the practical way to move all of it off site at once.

Four things drive what you pay: the container size, the weight and type of what you load, how long you keep it, and the disposal charge wherever your load is taken. Below you'll find our ranges, how the City handles containers on its streets, and what West Virginia will not allow into a landfill.

What Changes the Price in Charleston, WV

Here is what actually moves the number on a Charleston job.

Start with size. The bigger container costs more on the quote, and it still comes out ahead of a second delivery when the first one is full before the demolition is done.

Then the load itself. Disposal is charged by weight, so a container of wet plaster, old tile or tear-off shingles finishes much higher than the same container packed with cabinets and paneling. Tell us what the work produces and we can set the tonnage to fit.

The haul matters here more than it does in a flat city. Kanawha Valley loads travel to a permitted landfill, and the routes out of the valley are narrow and slow. That travel time is built into what disposal costs, whichever facility takes your container.

Street placement is the last piece. If the container has to sit on a City street or sidewalk, the City requires a permit and asks for about a week to process it, so build that into your schedule rather than into your budget at the last minute.

What Size Dumpster Do I Need in Charleston, WV?

Think about volume and weight separately, because a container rarely runs out of both at once. Prime Dumpster carries 10 through 40 yard sizes, and on the steeper streets here the shorter containers are often the only ones that fit the drive.

The 10-Yard Dumpster is the smallest we run. It fits a bathroom tear-out, a garage sort, or a yard project. It is also the size to ask for with brick, block, tile and old concrete, which reach the weight limit while the container still has room.

The 15-Yard Dumpster covers the middle ground: a kitchen strip, a floor pull, a porch rebuild. It gives you noticeably more volume without a much larger footprint on a narrow lot.

The 20-Yard Dumpster is the size most Charleston homeowners pick. A full cleanout or a remodel spanning several rooms goes in it, and it is still manageable on a residential drive.

The 30-Yard Dumpster suits additions, new construction and serious demolition, where the debris is mostly bulky.

The 40-Yard Dumpster is the largest container we deliver. Commercial fit-outs, industrial cleanouts and long demolition contracts are its natural work.

Torn between two sizes? Describe the job to your account manager and they'll tell you which one to take.

Do I Need a Permit for a Dumpster in Charleston, WV?

Set the container on private property, such as your own driveway or a fenced work site, and Charleston asks nothing of you. That is how most of our deliveries here are handled.

Put any part of it on a City street or sidewalk and the rules change. The City's Traffic, Parking and Transportation Department issues the permits for street obstructions and street closings. The office is at 612 Washington Street, E., and it is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The department's temporary street and sidewalk closure application asks for the block, the dates, the hours, the width and length of the work zone and a traffic control plan. The City asks you to allow seven days for processing and approval, so apply well before your delivery date. If your spot covers metered parking, the meters have to be rented separately through Parking Operations at 304-348-8158.

One more local rule is worth knowing. Charleston requires every commercial waste hauler working in the city to hold an annual City permit, on top of the state certification haulers carry. It does not limit you to one provider, but it is worth confirming for your address and your kind of work.

You can reach City Hall at 304-348-8000 with general questions. Your account manager will also track down the right office for your block and confirm placement before the truck is scheduled.

What Can You Not Put in a Dumpster in Charleston, WV?

Ordinary household and building debris is welcome. The hard limits come from the state and from the facility that ends up with your load.

The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection is direct about it: a landfill may not accept free liquids, hazardous waste, undewatered sewage sludge, pesticide containers that have not been rinsed and crushed, drums that are not empty and crushed, or covered electronic devices. The state counts a television, computer or video display with a screen bigger than four inches as a covered device, so a single old monitor in the load is a problem. Tires are handled under a separate state program and have to be kept out too.

Construction and demolition sites face a longer list, because the facilities that take clean rubble will not take putrescible or household waste, liquid paint of any kind, lacquers, solvents, adhesives, cements, sealants, pesticides, aerosols, brake fluid, motor oil and filters, other automotive fluids or fuels, railroad ties, pressure treated wood, engineered wood, piping, wiring, appliances and other metal waste, batteries, fluorescent tubes, ballasts and transformers, or carpet and synthetic flooring.

Paint, fuel, solvents and asbestos stay out of any standard container, everywhere. If your job has asbestos in it, that is licensed removal work and a separate disposal route.

Holding something you aren't sure about? Check with your account manager before it goes in.

What Can I Throw in a Dumpster Rental?

Household Debris Approved for Dumpster Rentals

Construction and Heavy Debris Accepted for Dumpster Rentals

If the item you want to dispose of isn’t on this list, give us a call for more guidance or check out our guide of what you can throw in a dumpster.

*Approved items may vary by location. Always check your local laws and regulations to avoid any fines or additional fees.

Where Your Waste Goes

For recycling, the Kanawha County Solid Waste Authority runs a drop-off at 600 Slack Street, Charleston, WV 25301, open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., reachable at 304-342-4477. It is one of two places in the county that take commonly recycled paper and plastic, and it is a useful stop for material you sort out before the container arrives.

Mixed roll-off loads go to a permitted landfill instead. The West Virginia Solid Waste Management Board keeps the state list of operating landfills and transfer stations, and every landfill in reach of Charleston is privately operated, including the nearest one west of the city on Sycamore Ridge Road at Hurricane, in Putnam County. Which facility receives your container depends on your hauler and the route that day.

The three transfer stations inside Kanawha County, at Chesapeake, Marmet and St. Albans, are listed by the state as municipal use only for town residents, so they are not an option for a contractor load.

Your account manager will confirm which facility is taking your container and explain the disposal charges that apply to your load before it is delivered.

How Fast Can You Get a Dumpster in Charleston, WV?

Most Charleston orders can be scheduled within one to two business days, with a 24 to 48 hour delivery window. Booking sooner is still better here, since a street permit needs about a week and the hillside streets often need a placement conversation first. Early booking tends to cost less as well.

These five habits make delivery day easy:

  • Say what is going in. The material and rough weight shape your quote, so have that ready when you call.
  • Call us early in the day. Next-day slots fill fast, and a morning call gets you the better choice of times.
  • Prepare the landing spot. The truck needs a straight run, clear height above, and no vehicles parked in the way. On a steep drive, tell us about the grade.
  • Start the permit first. Anything on a City street or sidewalk needs approval, and the City asks for seven days, so file before you lock in a date.
  • Set the pickup. Tell your account manager the day you finish and the empty haul gets booked straight away.

One timing note: the permit office keeps weekday hours and closes at 4:30 p.m., so a Friday afternoon request generally will not be handled until the following week.

Charleston, WV Dumpster Questions

How much does a dumpster rental cost in Charleston, WV?

Charleston dumpster rentals run from $399 to $499 for a 10-yard container up to $699 to $899 for a 40-yard container, on a standard five-day rental. What you load and the disposal charge at the receiving landfill both move the final figure. Your account manager confirms the included tonnage and the overage rate at booking.

Is it cheaper to rent a dumpster or go to the dump?

Renting almost always wins once a job passes a couple of pickup loads. Self-hauling out of the Kanawha Valley means a long drive to a landfill, a charge at the gate on every trip, fuel, and most of a weekend. One container handles the whole job in a single haul with no driving for you.

Will a couch fit in a 10-yard dumpster?

Yes, comfortably. A standard three-seat couch uses roughly a fifth of a 10-yard container, leaving space for a mattress, a dresser and a good stack of boxes. With furniture you run out of room long before the weight allowance becomes an issue.

When renting a dumpster, what can you not put in it?

Keep out hazardous waste, free liquids, paint, solvents, fuel and asbestos. West Virginia also bars televisions, computers and other covered electronic devices from its landfills, and tires go through a separate state program. Mention appliances and tires when you book so we can route them properly.

What is the cheapest dumpster I can rent in Charleston, WV?

The 10-yard container starts lowest, at $399 to $499. Your bill still depends on what fills it. Old concrete, plaster and tile are heavy enough to pass a small container's weight allowance quickly, so putting dense material in a load of its own usually works out cheaper overall.

How much is it to rent a dumpster for 3 days?

A three-day rental normally costs the same as the standard five-day rental, because pricing is built around the job rather than the number of days. Weight moves the bill far more than time does. Ask your account manager what tonnage is included and what each extra ton costs before delivery.

What can you legally put in a dumpster?

Everyday household and construction debris is fine: lumber, drywall, roofing, flooring, cabinets, furniture, carpet and general cleanout material. Clean concrete, brick and block are accepted too, and they are usually handled more cheaply when they travel as their own load. When an item is unclear, your account manager can check it first.
