Disposal costs weigh more heavily in Jackson than in most towns, and here's why.
Teton County has no active landfill nearby. Every load of trash goes to the county's transfer station south of town and is then trucked about 100 miles to a landfill in Idaho. The county charges $153 per ton for landfill-bound trash, with a $10 minimum for small loads.
That makes weight the biggest swing in your bill. Stone, tile, concrete and roofing are heavy, and they add disposal cost quickly. Refrigerators, mattresses and tires carry their own per-item charges at the transfer station.

The 10-Yard Dumpster fits a bathroom remodel, a condo cleanout, or an old stone patio. Dense debris reaches the weight limit before the container fills, so this size is the one for rock, brick and concrete.
The 15-Yard Dumpster works for a garage cleanout, new flooring, or a small roof. You get more space than the 10 without a big step up in cost.
The 20-Yard Dumpster handles a full-house cleanout or a remodel across several rooms. It's a common choice for Jackson homes and rentals.
The 30-Yard Dumpster suits large renovations, additions, and new home builds with plenty of lumber, drywall and packaging.

You typically don't need a permit for a dumpster on private property, such as your driveway or a building lot. If the container would sit on a Town street, sidewalk or parking space, the Town of Jackson requires a permit first.
That permit is the Public Right of Way Permit, handled by the Engineering Division of the Public Works Department. The Town's right-of-way permit page lists dumpsters on any street among the things that need one. It also covers using a sidewalk or parking space to store construction materials.
To apply, you'll email a packet to Town Engineering with the application, a sketch of the area you'll use, a traffic control plan with signs, and the location of any construction fencing. The Town sets fees and any bond after it reviews the packet, so apply well before your delivery date.

Most household junk and construction debris can go in your container. The limits come from the Teton County Trash Transfer Station, which receives Jackson's trash.
The transfer station won't take asbestos, liquid waste, or electronics like TVs, computers and phones. Batteries are refused too, including car batteries and lithium batteries. So are bear spray, propane canisters and other compressed gas cylinders, and fluorescent bulbs. Household hazardous waste, such as antifreeze, oil-based paint, turpentine, used motor oil and pesticides, goes to the county's seasonal drop-off by appointment instead.
Hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, and asbestos don't belong in a standard dumpster either. Demolition debris needs an asbestos test before it can be dumped. Concrete and masonry chunks must be no bigger than two feet on a side, with rebar cut flush.

Loads from Jackson go to the Teton County Trash Transfer Station, run by the county's Integrated Solid Waste and Recycling division. It sits on Highway 89 at Horsethief Canyon, about four miles south of High School Road. The phone number is 307-733-7678.
During summer, the transfer station is open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon. Every load must be tarped, and loads can be inspected, charged sort fees, or turned away. Demolition waste also needs 48 hours' notice before it's dropped off.
From there, trash is shipped about 100 miles to a landfill in Idaho, which is why the county works hard to sort out metal, yard waste and recyclables first. Your account manager can confirm your load's destination and explain the fees before delivery.
