South Dakota's natural resources agency says state law has kept four things out of landfills since 1995: yard waste, lead-acid batteries, used motor oil, and white goods, meaning large appliances. It's open Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. From December 1 through March 31, it's closed on Saturdays. You can reach the landfill at 605-693-3667.
The landfill recycles more than you might expect. Clean lumber and trees are ground into wood chips, tires are sent to a tire recycler, and metal is baled and recycled. Once material is dumped, nobody can take it back out.
