When your dumpster sits on private property, like your driveway or yard, you won't need the City's right-of-way permit in La Porte. The permit comes into play once the container sits on a City street or in the right-of-way.
The City lists "placement of dumpster in right-of-way" on its permit fee schedule. It's $15 for 1 to 15 days and $25 for 16 to 30 days. Permit applications are filed online through the City's service page.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management defines construction debris as lumber, brick, concrete, stone, glass, drywall, roofing, plumbing fixtures, wiring, and insulation without asbestos. It doesn't include fluorescent light fixtures, appliances, or regulated asbestos. Asbestos isn't allowed at construction debris sites at all.
Hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, and fuel can't go in a standard dumpster either. Keep out car batteries, tires, and propane tanks, too.
Clean rock, brick, concrete, and dirt aren't treated as solid waste in Indiana, so they can often be reused or taken to a clean fill site. Keeping them separate may lower your cost.

LaPorte County doesn't have a public landfill. The only permitted transfer station in the county, listed by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, is a privately run site at 7023 S. Hupp Street, south of La Porte near Kingsbury. Loads collected there may be sent on to a landfill outside the county.
For yard waste, the LaPorte County Solid Waste District runs a composting site on Zigler Road, and the City points residents to it. The district office is at 2857 W. State Road 2 and can be reached at 219-326-0014.
