Kannapolis publishes a floor of its own for permitted events. The City's special event planning guide asks for at least one toilet per 250 attendees, with at least 5 percent of them, and never fewer than one, accessible. On private property, usually not. A unit in your yard, on your driveway, or inside a fenced job site does not need a City permit in Kannapolis. Public ground is a different story.
Streets and City right-of-way: Work inside a City right-of-way or easement means calling the Engineering Department at 704-920-4200 before anything starts, so an inspector is assigned. That covers state roads inside the city limits as well as City streets.
Special events: A permit is required for events using streets, sidewalks, greenways, or public parks. An event held only on private property needs one when you ask the City for two or more services. Applications are due at least 30 days out, and the City's guide warns the full review can take months for a complex event. Food vendors: A temporary food permit comes from the county health agency, and applications go in at least 15 days ahead. Each booth needs warm water, a free-flowing faucet, and a container to catch the wastewater.

Put units on firm, level ground with a clear approach for a full-size truck. Red clay turns slick fast in a Piedmont downpour, so gravel or a plywood pad under the unit is cheap insurance. Watch for low limbs, tight gates, and cars parked in the drive lane on event morning.
Hold units at least 15 feet back from food service, and away from creeks, storm drains, and well heads. On a job site, keep them within about 200 feet of the work. At an event, split them into two or three stands so no single line builds, and keep the accessible unit on flat, solid ground with a clean path.
Standard rentals get one service visit per week. Large crews and long weekends usually want two.
Where does it end up? North Carolina requires a state permit before a firm can place or service portable toilets, and that permit spells out where the waste may be discharged. Locally, the Water and Sewer Authority of Cabarrus County runs the Rocky River Regional plant that treats sewage for Kannapolis and Concord, and its pretreatment staff run a septage hauler program with its own discharge permit.
