The ADA-Compliant Porta Potty has a wide door, level entry, grab bars, and turning space inside. Plan on one for any event the public can attend.

Maine made this easier in 2024. The state's health agency confirmed that a person may place and use a temporary portable toilet on property as long as the unit is maintained and serviced in a reasonable manner, and it will not enforce the old requirement for local plumbing inspector approval on a unit that stays longer than seven days. Licensed eating and lodging businesses are the exception and still need written approval from the local plumbing inspector.
City streets and sidewalks. A unit that sits in the public way is a different matter. Start at City Hall, 27 Pine Street, before anything goes on a street or a sidewalk, and give yourself time if the spot is downtown.
State roads. Lewiston is one of Maine's urban compact municipalities, which means state highways inside the compact limits are licensed by the municipal officers rather than by the state transportation department. Outside those limits, the state handles it, so ask which side of the line your spot falls on.
Events. The City's special events policy applies to any indoor or outdoor event needing City review, approval, service support, or the use of city-controlled property. Paperwork goes in between early March and the start of September and no later than 90 days before the event, everything must be complete and paid no later than 30 days out, and the processing fee is $50 and non-refundable once received. Park use and clerk permit fees are separate.
Food vendors. Temporary eating places apply 30 days ahead and cannot open until they've been inspected and licensed. Lewiston is one of only three Maine cities with its own municipal eating and lodging application, so tell your vendors to use the right form.

The Lewiston-Auburn authority runs the regional treatment plant on Lincoln Street for the two cities, and its own material says it treats septic and holding tank waste for 26 area communities alongside the sewered flow. Maine counts waste from portable toilets as septage, licenses the trucks that carry it, and requires a manifest naming who produced the load and which facility receives it.
