If the dumpster goes on private property, such as your driveway, you generally won't need a separate permit for the container. A spot in the street or on a sidewalk is different, so check with the Town first.
The Town of Schererville doesn't publish a dumpster permit. Its Code Enforcement page does say that any construction work on a property needs a Town permit, with the permit card shown in the front window. It also says anyone working as a contractor in town must be licensed. So the project behind your dumpster may need a permit even when the container doesn't.
The Planning and Building Department handles permits and contractor licenses. Call it at 219-322-2211. For a container near the street, you can also call Public Works at 219-322-6688, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Most household junk and remodeling debris is fine to load. The limits come from Indiana rules and from the facility that takes your load.
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management says spent car batteries may not go in landfills. Since 2011, Indiana households and small businesses have also been barred from throwing away TVs, computer monitors, computers, printers, and similar electronics. The state's e-waste page lists the full set of items. The Town's refuse page adds that leaves can't go into landfills.
Hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, and asbestos can't go in a standard dumpster either.
For those items, the Lake County Solid Waste Management District holds household hazardous waste collections and runs tire and appliance drop-off programs.
