A dumpster on private property, like your driveway or a job site, usually doesn't need a permit in Knoxville. Placing one in the street is a different matter.
The City's solid waste code says dumpsters can't be placed in the public right of way. They also can't sit anywhere that blocks traffic or cuts off a driver's view. Plan on a driveway, yard, or lot spot from the start.
Some homes in this part of town sit just outside City limits, on County roads. There, any work in the right-of-way needs a permit from Knox County Engineering and Public Works, which can take up to 30 days to review.
