A dumpster on private property, like your driveway, doesn't need a separate street permit in Gallatin. In fact, on home construction, remodel, and demolition jobs, the driveway or yard is where the City wants it.
Gallatin's Building Codes Department placement rules say dumpsters on those jobs can't sit in a public way at all. The dumpster must be added to the building permit, with its location shown on the plans, and the fee is $10 per dumpster. Roll-off dumpsters need a top cover that closes. For remodels and demolitions, the container must be in place before work starts, and it's checked at the pre-demolition inspection. Breaking the rules can mean a fine of up to $50, court costs, and a possible permit suspension.
The City explains why. Its fire trucks are about eight feet wide, and its aerial truck needs a 19-foot footprint to set up, so streets have to stay clear.
Residential building permits take at least three to five days, so plan ahead. Call Gallatin Building Codes at 615-451-5968. The office is at 132 W. Main Street, Room 202, and takes permit applications from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Your account manager can help you find the right contact.
