If your dumpster sits on private property, such as your driveway or a job site, you generally won't need a Metro permit. That changes once any part of it lands on a street, sidewalk, or alley.
Louisville Metro Public Works offers a Pod or Dumpster Permit for containers in the public right-of-way. You apply online through the Metro Business Portal, which the Right of Way Permits and Licenses page links to. Public Works treats a dumpster left in the wrong spot as an obstruction, so get the permit before the container arrives.
A container that blocks a large area or a lane may need a larger block permit, too. The Metro doesn't post a fee online for the dumpster permit.

Most household and building debris can go in your container. The limits come from Kentucky's disposal rules and from the landfill's own rules.
Hazardous waste can't go to a regular landfill in Kentucky. That covers most chemicals, acids, pesticides, and anything flammable or toxic. Liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, oil, and asbestos can't go in a standard dumpster either.
