Several things decide what a South Portland dumpster costs.

The 20-Yard Dumpster is a common choice for whole-house cleanouts and remodels that cover several rooms, and it's about the most you'll want for dense material like tile and wet decking.
The 30-Yard Dumpster fits large renovations, additions, and new construction with a mix of debris.
The 40-Yard Dumpster is our biggest size, meant for commercial jobs, demolition, and large property cleanouts. On narrow older streets, a smaller container is often the better fit.

A container kept on private property, like your driveway or yard, doesn't need City approval in South Portland. The rules change when it sits in a street or on a sidewalk.
South Portland's streets and sidewalks ordinance allows a temporary installation tied to building construction, repair, or remodeling, with conditions. It can't take up more than one-third of the width of the street or more than half the width of a sidewalk. The Public Works Director must be notified first and approve it, and it can't stay longer than six months.
There's no separate named permit or listed fee for this approval. Call South Portland Public Works at 207-767-7635 before delivery to give notice and get the go-ahead. The City can add conditions for safety, so leave some time before your delivery date.

Most debris from a remodel or cleanout can go in your container. Maine's rules and the facility that takes the load set the limits.
The Maine Department of Environmental Protection says it's illegal to throw away cathode ray tubes and LCD screens. That covers TVs, computer monitors, laptops, tablets, and other devices with screens, which go to electronics recycling instead. Maine also bans throwing away mercury-added products, such as old thermostats and fluorescent bulbs.
Hazardous waste, liquids, fuel, solvents, oil-based paint, propane tanks, and asbestos don't belong in a standard dumpster. The City holds a free household hazardous waste drop-off twice a year for residents, and Maine's paint take-back program accepts leftover paint at participating stores.
Appliances with Freon, such as refrigerators, dehumidifiers, and air conditioners, need special handling. Mattresses and tires are charged per piece at local facilities, so mention them when you book.

South Portland was one of the four towns that founded ecomaine, the non-profit, community-owned recycling and waste-to-energy plant in Portland. The City's own trash and recycling go there, and it's the usual stop for mixed household debris.

Construction and demolition debris often goes to Riverside Recycling instead. The City of Portland owns this facility, and it processes construction debris, bulky items, and yard waste for residents, businesses, and contractors.
