If the container sits on private property, like your driveway or a job site lot, you typically won't need a street permit in Boise. Things change when any part of it sits on a street, sidewalk, or shoulder.
In Boise, public streets belong to the Ada County Highway District, not the City. The district requires a Temporary Use Permit for any work in the public right-of-way, including the roadway, the sidewalk, and the shoulder. You apply online, and the fee schedule is posted with the application. Boise's own code also says a container can't block a street or sidewalk without the district's written approval.
The City also has a rule about who can provide a roll-off. A 10 to 40 yard container for a project that lasts less than 90 days may come from any company. Longer projects must go through the City's franchise service. A property can have one short-term project container per calendar year, and it can't hold regular household trash or recycling. Most building and cleanout debris is fine. The limits come from the county landfill and from Boise's container rules.
The Ada County Landfill doesn't accept hazardous waste, meaning anything flammable, corrosive, explosive, reactive, or toxic. Asbestos is only taken with 24 hours' notice and an appointment. Tires and refrigerated appliances are charged by the piece, so mention them before loading.
Hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, and asbestos can't go in a standard dumpster either.
Boise adds one more rule. A short-term project container is meant for project debris, so everyday household trash, recycling, and food waste belong in your regular carts. Ada County residents can take leftover chemicals to the county's Household Hazardous Waste Facility.
