When the dumpster sits on private property, like your driveway or a job site, you usually won't need anything from the City. Things are different if it has to sit in a street, alley, or on a sidewalk.
The City of Kingsport doesn't post a separate dumpster permit online. Its Engineering Division, part of Public Works, looks after City streets and the right-of-way. The division's contact page lists its office at 130 Shelby Street.
Before you plan a street drop, call the Engineering Division at 423-229-9475. Ask whether your spot needs approval and whether you'll need cones or lights around the container.

Most construction and household debris can go in. The limits come from Tennessee's disposal rules and from what the Kingsport Landfill is allowed to take.
Because it's a demolition landfill, the Kingsport Landfill can't accept household garbage, cardboard, or paper. It also doesn't take TVs, computer monitors, or laptops. Those go to the Sullivan County transfer station instead.
Hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, oil, and asbestos can't go in a standard dumpster either. Sullivan County collects household chemicals and pesticides once a year at a special event.
Tires are charged separately at the landfill and must be off the rim, so mention them when you book. If you aren't sure about an item, ask your account manager before it goes in.
