The 10-Yard Dumpster fits a bathroom remodel, a single room cleanout, or a small load of brick or broken concrete. Dense debris hits the weight limit before the container fills.
The 15-Yard Dumpster works for a garage cleanout or a roof tear-off on a smaller house.
The 20-Yard Dumpster is a common pick in Richmond for whole-house cleanouts, move-outs, and remodels that span several rooms.
The 30-Yard Dumpster is sized for major renovations, additions, and new home construction.
The 40-Yard Dumpster is our largest size. It's meant for commercial jobs, demolition, and large property cleanups.

If the dumpster stays on private property, like your driveway or a job site, you usually won't need anything from the City. The question comes up only when a container would sit on a public street, alley, or sidewalk.
Richmond doesn't publish a dumpster permit or a fee for placing one in the street. The department in charge of City streets is Richmond Public Works, led by Director Josh Farthing, according to the state's official city record. Public Works handles street maintenance, snow removal, and curbside limb and yard waste pickup.
Before placing a container in the street, call Richmond Public Works at 859-625-6435 and ask whether you need approval and how much lead time to allow. City Hall, at 239 W. Main Street, takes general calls at 859-623-1000.

Most household and building debris can go in your container. Kentucky's landfill rules and the receiving landfill decide the rest.
Kentucky is more relaxed than many states about electronics. The Energy and Environment Cabinet says electronics aren't banned from landfills, so households may throw away computers and monitors as long as the hauler and landfill accept them. The Cabinet still urges recycling them.
Tires are a different matter. Kentucky pays for a statewide waste tire program through a fee on each new tire sold, and old tires are handled through that program rather than ordinary trash. Keep tires out of your container.
Hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, propane tanks, and asbestos aren't allowed in a standard dumpster either. Mention appliances and anything unusual when you book.

Madison County has no active trash landfill. The state's solid waste facility register lists the old Richmond Landfill on Four Mile Road and the Berea Landfill on Estridge Road as closed. The City of Richmond runs its own permitted transfer station for its collection service, and the nearest active landfill for household and building waste is privately run, one county east in Estill County.
For recycling, the City runs the Richmond Recycling Center at 550 Recycle Drive, Richmond, KY 40475. It's open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and has a 24-hour drop-off that any Madison County resident can use. Call 859-625-0202 with questions.
