The 15-Yard Dumpster works for a two-car garage cleanout, a small roof, or carpet and flooring from a few rooms.
The 20-Yard Dumpster is a common choice in Columbus for a whole-house cleanout or a remodel that runs through several rooms.

If the dumpster sits on private property, like your driveway or a job site, you don't need a City permit in Columbus. If it goes in a street or alley, you'll need one first.
The City calls it the Temporary ROW Occupant Permit, and its application packet lists "Dumpster" as the first option on the form. The packet says there are currently no fees for this permit. City staff review the site after they accept your application, and no review time is listed, so apply early.
The form sets clear rules. The container can stay for no more than two weeks. It must sit at least 50 feet from an intersection and 15 feet from a fire hydrant, with boards under it to protect the pavement and reflective strips on its side. You also need a barricade or cones on each traffic side, and the City doesn't supply barricades.

Most remodel and cleanout debris is fine. The limits come from Nebraska's landfill rules and the City's transfer station.
Nebraska law bans three things from landfills: lead-acid batteries and waste oil, discarded household appliances, and waste tires in almost any form. Because every Columbus load ends up at a landfill, those items need to stay out of your dumpster.
The City's banned materials list spells it out for the transfer station. It refuses appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, water heaters, washers, dryers, and stoves. It also refuses slate shingles and siding, anything longer than eight feet, burn barrels, car batteries, paint, antifreeze, pesticides, motor oil, and tires. Liquid paint can't go in, but the City notes that paint mixed with kitty litter and dried out can go out with regular trash.
Hazardous waste, liquids, solvents, fuel, and asbestos can't go in a standard dumpster either. Cut long boards and pipe to under eight feet before loading.

Residents can drop off yard waste and lawn clippings for free, and the City grinds wood and brush into mulch that's free to the public.
From April through November, the transfer station is open Monday through Friday, 8:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. From December through March, weekday hours end at 3:45 p.m. It's open Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon all year and closed on Sundays and major holidays.
