Fort Collins is unusually clear on this. The City's engineering permit list names dumpsters outright as an encroachment in the right-of-way, alongside storage units and landscaping material. A minor permit costs $10 to apply for, with a matching inspection fee. Cutting into the street or sidewalk falls under a separate excavation permit.
The Engineering Department sits at 281 N. College Ave., Fort Collins, CO 80524, and you can reach it at 970-221-6605. Walk-in hours run Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Apply before you set a delivery date.
Contractors have a second box to tick. The City requires that waste and recycling haulers on qualifying projects be licensed by Fort Collins, and Larimer County adds its own annual hauler license at $35 per company for anyone using County disposal sites. Most remodeling and cleanout debris is fine to load. The limits come from Colorado's statewide disposal bans and from what the County sites will take.
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment keeps several household materials out of any solid waste site. Lead-acid batteries are banned. So are liquid wastes and anything holding free liquids, used oil, waste tires, and electronic devices and computers.
Larimer County adds its own rules. Friable asbestos is refused outright, while non-friable asbestos needs a manifest. Propane tanks, fire extinguishers, and other gas cylinders are only accepted when completely empty with the valve assembly removed. Barrels and drums over five gallons must be crushed or punched through at both ends. Car bodies are turned away and sent to a metal recycler instead.
Paint, solvents, fuel, pesticides, and pool chemicals also need to stay out of your container. Larimer County runs a household hazardous waste drop-off at the Taft Hill site for those.

Fort Collins loads changed destination this summer. Larimer County closed its Taft Hill landfill in August 2026 and moved disposal to the Central Diversion & Transfer Station at 2388 W Trilby Road, Fort Collins, CO 80526, which now takes the same waste the old landfill accepted. County disposal hours run 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
From there, trash is reloaded and trucked up I-25 to the Larimer County North Landfill at 15669 N County Rd 9, Wellington, CO 80549, which opened the same day. That site mainly serves the transfer station and commercial haulers, and it can close on high wind days, in which case loads stay at the Trilby Road site.
Construction debris has its own path. Under the County's waste plan, mixed loads of construction and demolition material are routed to a County-owned processing facility that sorts out wood, metal, and concrete for reuse. On top of that, City building rules require concrete, aggregate, wood, metal, and cardboard from qualifying projects to go to a recycling facility rather than a landfill.
