Massachusetts bans more materials from disposal than most states. The Town reprints the state's list in its own solid waste regulations.
Banned items include glass, plastic, and metal containers, cardboard, newspaper, yard waste, and leaves. The list also covers car batteries, tires, large appliances, appliances with Freon, TVs, computer monitors, and fluorescent bulbs. Scrap metal, asphalt pavement, brick, concrete, wood, clean drywall, mattresses, and textiles are on it too.
That doesn't mean a remodel can't use a dumpster. It means banned materials have to be recycled instead of thrown away, so the load has to go somewhere that handles them properly. Hazardous waste, liquids, fuel, solvents, paint, and asbestos can't go in a standard dumpster at all.
Tell your account manager what's in your pile, and they'll explain how each material is handled before it goes in.
