Most remodeling and cleanout debris can go in your container. North Carolina's landfill bans and the rules at Wake County's sites set the limits.
The state's landfill disposal bans keep these items out: antifreeze, aluminum cans, computers and TVs, lead-acid batteries, oil filters, plastic bottles, scrap tires, used oil, white goods like refrigerators and washers, wooden pallets, and yard trash. Lithium-ion batteries join the list on December 1, 2026.
Construction and demolition landfills also can't take fluorescent lights or mercury thermostats. Solar panels are added to that list in December 2026.
Hazardous waste, paint, solvents, fuel, asbestos, and other liquids aren't allowed in a standard dumpster either. Wake County also requires that all waste at the South Wake Landfill come from inside the county.
