The 20-Yard Dumpster is a common size in Asheville for whole-house cleanouts and storm repairs. It also works for most roof replacements on a typical home.

If the dumpster sits on private property, such as your driveway or a job site, you usually won't need a permit in Asheville. The rules change once it moves onto a street, a sidewalk, or downtown parking spaces.
The City of Asheville's Transportation Department issues a Temporary Closure Permit for a dumpster placed on any city street or in downtown on-street parking. The application needs a traffic control plan and a sketch of the area to be closed. Fees start with a $100 application fee, plus $50 for a permit that lasts one to seven days. Longer permits cost more, and bagging a parking meter adds a daily charge through Parking Services.

Most building and cleanout debris can go in. The limits come from North Carolina's landfill bans and from Buncombe County's rules at the landfill.
North Carolina bans a long list of items from landfills. It includes TVs and computer equipment, car batteries, used oil and oil filters, antifreeze, and scrap tires. White goods like refrigerators, washers, and stoves are banned too, along with wooden pallets, yard trash, aluminum cans, and plastic bottles. Starting December 1, 2026, lithium-ion batteries join the list.
Hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, and asbestos can't go in a standard dumpster either.
At the county landfill, asbestos takes an appointment and advance notice. TVs and paint go through special collection days at the landfill instead of the trash.

The site includes the main landfill plus separate areas for construction debris, white goods, wood waste, household hazardous waste, and concrete, brick, and block recycling. The landfill is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Big loads that take more than 30 minutes to unload must arrive by 4 p.m. on weekdays and by noon on Saturday. Every load has to be covered and secure.
