In Boston, where the container sits matters almost as much as its size.
Size is still the starting point. A larger container costs more, but picking the right one keeps you from overage fees and extra hauls.
Weight comes next. Plaster, brick, tile, and old slate are heavy and eat into your included tonnage. Furniture and boxes take room but weigh little.
Street placement adds cost. Many homes in Dorchester, Roxbury, and Jamaica Plain have no driveway, so the container ends up on the street. The City's street occupancy permit has a $50 base fee, plus $.10 per square foot each day for the first 500 square feet. That daily charge runs until the container leaves.
The City's trash service won't help much with a remodel. Boston's trash crews don't collect construction debris, plumbing fixtures, or water heaters, so a private container is the usual route for that material.

The 10-Yard Dumpster is right for a bathroom gut, a single room cleanout, or a pile of plaster and lath. It's also the easiest size to fit on a tight street or a short driveway.
The 15-Yard Dumpster works for an attic or basement cleanout, flooring removal, or a small roof tear-off.
The 20-Yard Dumpster is a popular choice in Boston for a full-floor remodel in a triple-decker or a whole-unit cleanout.
The 30-Yard Dumpster fits large renovations, condo conversions, and new construction.
The 40-Yard Dumpster is our biggest size, made for commercial projects, demolition, and large building cleanouts.
Boston's dumpster rules also say no container may be filled to within four inches of the top, so plan a little extra room. Your account manager can help you choose.
Boston is different from most cities here. Even on private property, like a driveway, the City's Site Cleanliness page says a license is required for all residential and business owners who use bulk refuse containers. The license fee is $50, and it must be renewed every year.
You apply by mail or in person at Inspectional Services, 1010 Massachusetts Avenue, 5th Floor, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The application needs a maintenance plan and a current waste disposal contract. For questions, call Inspectional Services at 617-635-5300.
If the container goes on a street or sidewalk, you'll also need a street occupancy permit from Public Works. Apply online at least seven business days before you need the space, and the permit calls for proof of a $5,000 surety bond. We'll confirm who files it. Boston's dumpster rules also bar emptying or moving a container between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. Your account manager can help you sort out both permits and the right City contacts.
Most remodeling and cleanout debris is fine. Massachusetts waste bans and City rules set the limits.
The City's trash page explains that the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection bans many materials from landfills and incinerators. That list includes mattresses, textiles, old tube TVs, items containing Freon, lead-acid batteries, and whole tires. It also bans asphalt, brick, concrete, wood, clean drywall, and metal, which must go to recycling instead.
That doesn't mean your container can't hold construction debris. It means the facility that takes your load has to sort out the banned materials for recycling. Keep mattresses, TVs, tires, and batteries out, and tell us about heavy loads of brick or concrete.
Hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, and asbestos can't go in a standard dumpster either. If you're not sure about something, ask your account manager before you load it.

The City of Boston doesn't collect construction debris, and it doesn't publish where private loads go. The state keeps a register of permitted waste facilities, and it lists two inside Boston, both in Roxbury.
One is a large transfer station at 68 Norfolk Avenue, permitted for 810 tons a day. The other is a large construction and demolition processing facility at 101-111 Gerard Street, permitted for 450 tons a day. The Gerard Street site is the kind of place that sorts renovation debris for recycling.
For items the City collects itself, Boston offers special collection by appointment. It covers up to 10 items a year, such as TVs, air conditioners, and refrigerators, for homes that qualify. Mattress pickup is separate and limited to buildings with six units or fewer. Call 311 or 617-635-4500 to schedule.
The state register lists permits, not routes, so your load could go elsewhere. Your account manager will confirm where your load is going and explain the fees before delivery.
Most Boston dumpster rentals can be scheduled within one to two business days, with the container arriving in a 24 to 48 hour window. If it needs to sit on the street, the City's seven business day permit lead time sets the real schedule.
