Most renovation and cleanout debris is fine. The limits come from North Carolina's statewide landfill bans and from what the receiving site will take.
The state keeps a list of items banned from landfills. It includes used oil, antifreeze, lead-acid batteries, whole tires, and oil filters. Refrigerators, washers, and other large appliances are banned too, along with computers, monitors, printers, and TVs. Aluminum cans, yard waste, and wooden pallets are also on the list, though pallets can go to a landfill that only takes construction debris.
On top of that, hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, and asbestos stay out of any standard dumpster.
Wake County takes household hazardous materials at the South Wake Landfill site at 6130 Old Smithfield Road in Apex. The county's Southern Wake Landfill Convenience Center at 6025 Old Smithfield Road accepts appliances from residents at no charge. For county questions, call 919-856-7400.
