A dumpster on private property, such as your driveway or yard, doesn't need a permit from the City. A container that sits in a street or alley is where you'll want to ask first.
Dodge City's permit pages cover building, fence, roofing, and sign work, plus a utility excavation permit. None of them is a permit for parking a rented container in the street. The City's Engineering Services Department handles right-of-way coordination, so it's the right office to ask.
Call Engineering Services at 620-225-8106. The office is at 100 Chaffin and is open Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. It closes for lunch. The City doesn't publish a fee or a review time, so call before you set a delivery date.
City rules also require private trash haulers to hold a City license. If you're not sure where your property ends or which City contact you need, your account manager can help you find the right one.
Most construction and household debris can go in your container. Kansas law and the county landfill's rules set the limits.
Kansas law doesn't count some items as ordinary construction debris, even when they come from a job site. That list includes friable asbestos, tires, drums, and furniture or appliances that still hold refrigerant. Those items need their own handling.
The Ford County Landfill also turns away household hazardous waste, burned trash, dead animals, tires still on rims, and tractor tires. Fridges and freezers must have their food cleaned out and their refrigerant drained properly. Hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, and asbestos can't go in a standard dumpster either.
Keep tires, metal, and brush separate from your general debris when you can. If you're unsure about anything, ask your account manager before it goes in.

Dodge City's waste goes to the Ford County Landfill at 10349 110 Road. It's open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and on the first and third Saturday of each month, 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Commercial loads are accepted until 4 p.m. on weekdays and 2 p.m. on those Saturdays.
