The 20-Yard Dumpster is the size most Iowa City households book. It handles a full house cleanout, a rental turnover, or a remodel that runs through several rooms.

A container on private property, such as your own driveway or inside the job site, is the simple case and needs no City approval in most projects. Anything in the street is a different matter here.
Iowa City is unusually direct about it. The City's own guidance says the street is not a proper or legal place for storage of any kind, and it spells out that the public right-of-way takes in the street, the sidewalk, and the whole area in between. Leaving something parked there without approval can bring a citation, and the City's stated reasons are practical: large containers block sightlines, are hard to see at night, and can get in the way of emergency vehicles.
When a job genuinely needs street space, the City handles it through its online permit portal, which carries applications for temporary use of the right-of-way, temporary no parking signs, and excavation in the right-of-way. Public Works takes questions about those applications at 319-356-5140, and the main City number is 319-356-5000.
Downtown and the blocks around campus are where this matters most, since driveways are short and parking is tight. Ask your account manager early and we will work out whether your spot needs approval before delivery day.
Most household and construction debris loads without any trouble. The limits come from hazardous waste handling and from what the landfill is allowed to take.
Hazardous material never goes in a container. That means paint, solvents, fuel, pesticides, pool chemicals, and asbestos, along with liquids of any kind. The City runs a hazardous material collection facility at the landfill site, with residential drop-off on Thursday and Friday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday morning, and business drop-off by appointment.
Batteries and electronics have their own City programs too, so pull televisions, monitors, computers, and loose batteries out of the pile rather than burying them in the load.
Yard waste and food scraps go to the City's compost operation instead of the landfill. Keeping them out leaves more room in the container for the debris you are actually paying to haul.
One more rule is worth knowing before you book. The landfill cannot accept material generated outside its service area, so debris hauled in from another county is a problem rather than a simple extra charge. The compost side of the site is being expanded through 2026, so traffic patterns and drop-off areas there shift from time to time.
