Most household junk and remodeling debris can go in your container. The limits come from Maryland's landfill rules and from the facility that receives the load.
Maryland bans scrap tires from landfills, so keep tires out of your dumpster. Hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, and asbestos are also off limits in a standard container.
The county's Brown Station Road landfill lists more items it won't take. These include roofing shingles, construction and demolition debris, soil and rocks, stumps and logs, pallets, auto parts, and gas cylinders. Because of that list, a load of shingles or drywall can't simply ride along with household trash.
Smaller items have an easy outlet. The City's recycling drop-off center at 4631 Arundel Place accepts batteries, electronics, clothing, and Styrofoam from Hyattsville residents who bring a photo ID.
Describe your debris to your account manager, and they'll tell you what can go in and what needs another route.
