If the dumpster sits on private property, like your driveway or a building lot, you usually won't need City approval. The City's rules kick in when a container touches the public right-of-way.
Under the City's solid waste code, placing a dumpster in the public right-of-way without written approval from the public works director is a violation. The code also bans any dumpster from the travel lanes or gutter of a City street. That means a curbside spot needs sign-off first, and the street itself is off limits.
Many beach homes and condos have tight parking, so plan the drop spot early. Your account manager can help you find the right contact at the City's Public Works Department before delivery.
Most remodeling and cleanout debris is fine to load. What stays out is set by South Carolina law and by the county landfill.
South Carolina keeps used oil and lead-acid batteries out of regular trash. State law also bars computers, monitors, and TVs from waste headed to a landfill, and the landfill can turn away a load with more than a small amount of them. The Solid Waste Authority notes that state law bans yard waste from household trash landfills too.
Other items to leave out include hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, and asbestos. Tires are accepted at the landfill for a much higher fee, so mention them when you book.
