Most household junk and building debris can go in your dumpster. The limits come from Virginia's solid waste rules, which the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality enforces at every permitted landfill, and from what the receiving site agrees to take.
Keep hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, and asbestos out of the container. The same goes for propane tanks, gas cans, pesticides, and road flares.
Richmond gives residents a place for some of these. The City's East Richmond Road Convenience Center takes household paint, motor oil, fuels, car batteries, and up to four tires without rims from City residents. It won't take fire extinguishers, asbestos, road flares, herbicides, pesticides, or explosives.
Tires, mattresses, and appliances with refrigerant may carry extra fees at a private landfill, so mention them when you book. If you're unsure about any item, ask your account manager before you load it.
