Most household junk and building debris can go in the container. The limits come from Louisiana's landfill rules and from the facility that takes your load.
The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality bans some household hazardous waste from municipal landfills. Its household hazardous waste guide names lead-acid batteries, used oil, whole waste tires and small sealed lead-acid batteries.
Beyond that, hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, and asbestos can't go in a standard dumpster. Keep propane tanks, pool chemicals and gas cans out as well.
Appliances with refrigerant should be mentioned when you book, since they need special handling.

St. Bernard Parish runs two public dumpsites through its Public Works department. One is at the E.J. Gore Pump Station, 7701 E. Judge Perez Drive, Violet, LA 70092, right here in Violet. The other is at 5120 Paris Road in Chalmette. Both are open seven days a week, 7 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.
The Parish doesn't post what those sites accept, so call Public Works before hauling there yourself. Full roll-off loads of construction debris go to a permitted construction and demolition landfill. The state's solid waste capacity report lists several of these in the southeast region.
