At Prime Dumpster, we provide roll-off dumpster rentals across New Orleans, Louisiana, and the surrounding metro in sizes from 10 to 40 yards. Shotgun houses and raised cottages in Mid-City, Bayou St. John, and Treme are always in some stage of renovation, and storm season brings roof and siding repairs every year. What Changes the Price in New Orleans, LA

Several New Orleans details shape the final price.

Size is the first. A container that holds the entire job costs less than a second haul when a small one fills up.

What's in the load matters a lot here. Building debris can go to the City-owned debris landfill in eastern New Orleans, which charges by the cubic yard. Furniture and household trash can't go there. A cleanout full of old furniture has to go to a regular landfill outside the city, which can change your price.

Street placement adds real cost in this city. Many homes have no driveway, so the container often goes on the street. The City's dumpster permit starts with a $40 application fee. On streets without meters, you'll also pay $10 a day for every 22 feet of space. In metered areas, you rent every meter space the container covers.

Weight still counts too. Plaster from old walls and wet flooring after a storm add up quickly.

What Size Dumpster Do I Need in New Orleans, LA?

Consider how much debris you'll have and how heavy it is. Prime Dumpster carries sizes from 10 to 40 yards.

The 10-Yard Dumpster fits a bathroom gut, a small porch repair, or a courtyard cleanup. It's also the pick for brick, concrete, and plaster, since heavy loads reach the weight cap well before the top. Its short length helps on narrow streets.

The 15-Yard Dumpster suits a kitchen remodel, a camelback cleanout, or old flooring from several rooms. It gives you more room for a modest step up in price.

The 20-Yard Dumpster is a common size in New Orleans for gutting a shotgun house and for storm repairs. It handles most roof replacements on a typical home, too.

The 30-Yard Dumpster is made for full renovations, new construction, and interior demolition. Choose it when a job creates a large pile of mixed debris.

The 40-Yard Dumpster is our largest. It's used for commercial builds, big tear-downs, and warehouse cleanouts.

Can't decide? Tell your account manager about the house and the street, and they'll help you choose.

Do I Need a Permit for a Dumpster in New Orleans, LA?

If the dumpster sits on private property, like a driveway or side yard, you don't need a permit in New Orleans. The City does require the container to stay on the lot where the work is happening, not on a nearby lot.

Once the container goes on a street, sidewalk, alley, or other public space, you need the City's Dumpster or Storage Container Permit before delivery. The application asks for a plot plan. It shows nearby streets, street widths, traffic direction, and any signs or signals. The container can't block a fire hydrant, a traffic signal, or a neighbor's driveway without their consent. It also has to show the owner's name, address, and phone number on each side, plus yellow reflectors on each end. The permit must be posted where people can read it from the street.

The City's construction dumpster standards set fines for placing a container on the street without one. They start at $100 and rise to $500 for repeat offenses.

The Department of Public Works Traffic Division handles these permits. You can reach it at 504-658-8040. Your account manager can help you plan the permit and the spot before delivery.

What Can You Not Put in a Dumpster in New Orleans, LA?

Most renovation and roofing debris is fine. The limits come from Louisiana's landfill rules and from what the City's debris landfill will take.

Louisiana's construction debris landfills can't take household trash, food waste, liquids, or hazardous waste. Unprocessed tires are banned from every landfill in the state.

Hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, and asbestos can't go in a standard dumpster either.

The debris landfill in eastern New Orleans has its own longer list. It turns away furniture, appliances like refrigerators and freezers, TVs and computers, tires, and treated lumber. It also refuses batteries, motors, gas cylinders, and closed containers. If one of those items turns up, the whole load can be rejected, charged a fee, and sent somewhere else.

Mention furniture, appliances, and treated wood when you book. Your account manager can help you sort the load so it goes to the right place.

What Can I Throw in a Dumpster Rental?

Household Debris Approved for Dumpster Rentals

Construction and Heavy Debris Accepted for Dumpster Rentals

If the item you want to dispose of isn’t on this list, give us a call for more guidance or check out our guide of what you can throw in a dumpster.

*Approved items may vary by location. Always check your local laws and regulations to avoid any fines or additional fees.

Where Your Waste Goes

Most construction and demolition loads from New Orleans go to a City-owned debris landfill at 10200 Almonaster Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70127, in the industrial area of eastern New Orleans. A private company runs it under contract. It takes building debris, wood waste, and yard trash.

The landfill is open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, 7 a.m. to noon. It's closed Sundays. Loads with furniture, household trash, or appliances can't go there. Those go to a regular landfill outside Orleans Parish instead.

The City also requires every truck that hauls solid waste to carry a City permit and decal, and it's against City rules to use a hauler without one. Your account manager can confirm where your load is headed and explain the fees before delivery.

How Fast Can You Get a Dumpster in New Orleans, LA?

Most New Orleans rentals can be delivered within one to two business days, arriving in a 24 to 48 hour window. If the container needs the street, get the City permit approved first. After a storm, demand jumps, so an early call helps.

Tips for a smooth delivery:

  • Tell us about the street. Narrow streets, low oak limbs, and parked cars all affect where the truck can set the container.
  • Call before noon. Morning calls have the best shot at a next-day slot.
  • File for the street permit. If there's no driveway, apply for the City permit and plan for meter rental if needed.
  • Keep furniture separate. Household items and appliances can't go to the debris landfill, so tell us what's in the load.
  • Call when you're done. Let your account manager know you're finished so pickup is set quickly.

The debris landfill closes at noon on Saturday and stays closed Sunday. A container filled late in the week may be hauled on Monday.

New Orleans, LA Dumpster Questions

How much does a dumpster rental cost in New Orleans, LA?

In New Orleans, a 10-yard dumpster runs $399 to $499, and a 40-yard runs $699 to $899, based on a five-day rental. Your debris type, the disposal site, and any street permit also affect the total. Your account manager will confirm the included weight and overage rate when you book.

Is it cheaper to rent a dumpster or go to the dump?

For most jobs, a dumpster costs less. The debris landfill is out in eastern New Orleans, and it won't take furniture or household trash. That can mean trips to more than one site. One roll-off lets you load everything and have it hauled in a single trip.

Will a couch fit in a 10-yard dumpster?

Yes. A three-seat couch fills about a fifth of a 10-yard dumpster, leaving room for chairs and boxes. Just tell us it's in there. The City's debris landfill doesn't take furniture, so the load may go to a different landfill.

When renting a dumpster, what can you not put in it?

Keep out hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, asbestos, batteries, and tires. The debris landfill also refuses TVs, computers, appliances, treated lumber, and gas cylinders. Furniture and household trash need a different landfill. Your account manager can help you plan for each of these.

What is the cheapest dumpster I can rent in New Orleans, LA?

The 10-yard dumpster is the lowest-priced size, at $399 to $499. What you load still decides the final cost. Plaster, brick, and wet flooring can push a small container past its weight limit. Keeping heavy debris in its own load often saves money.

How much is it to rent a dumpster for 3 days?

A three-day rental usually costs the same as five days, because we price by the job. If the container sits on the street, the City's daily permit charge is the part that changes with time. Ask your account manager what weight is included and what extra tons cost.

What can you legally put in a dumpster?

Most building debris is allowed in New Orleans. That includes drywall, plaster, untreated lumber, shingles, flooring, cabinets, and yard trash. Brick and concrete are fine too, though they're heavy. Furniture and household junk are allowed in the container but go to a different landfill, so check with your account manager.
