The 20-Yard Dumpster is a go-to size in Murray for kitchen remodels, basement finishes, and cleanouts that span most of a house.

When your dumpster sits on private property, such as a driveway or a job site, you typically won't need a permit in Murray. The City's own guidance for residential containers says they belong on the homeowner's property, most often in the driveway.
A container in the street or another part of the public right-of-way is different. Murray's own dumpster guidance says a 30-yard container may go in the street only with approval from Public Works staff. Work in the right-of-way is permitted through the Engineering Office at 4646 S. 500 W.
The City's permit page lists a $200 fee for encroachment, paid before the permit is issued and not refunded. It also asks anyone working in the right-of-way to hold a state license and post a $10,000 bond. Those rules are written for road work, so ask how they apply to a container before you book a street spot.

Everyday remodeling and cleanout debris is fine. The limits come from Utah's landfill rules and from what the receiving landfill accepts.
Utah limits whole tires at a landfill to 12 at a time from one person, and the county follows that with its own 12-tire cap per load. The county landfill also refuses solar panels and battery systems outright.
Murray City no longer takes hazardous waste at Public Works. Instead, the City sends residents to the Salt Lake County landfill, Trans-Jordan Landfill, or the county's household hazardous waste center at 8805 S. 700 W.
Hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, and asbestos can't go in a standard dumpster. Keep those out, and tell us about mattresses, tires, and Freon appliances before delivery.

The Salt Lake Valley Landfill, run by Salt Lake County, is at 6030 W. California Ave., Salt Lake City, UT 84104. It's open Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. It closes on Sundays, New Year's Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Every load must be securely covered, as the county's landfill page explains.
Trans-Jordan Landfill, at 10473 S. Bacchus Highway, South Jordan, UT 84009, is owned by eight cities, and Murray is one of them. It's open Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Its home page lists a gate price of $42.00 per ton as of July 1, 2026, and it charges double for loads that aren't fully tarped.
