Missouri has banned four items from landfills since 1991: major appliances, whole tires, used oil, and lead-acid batteries. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources counts refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, stoves, dishwashers, and water heaters as major appliances. Stores that sell car batteries must take an old one back when you buy a new one.
Electronics follow a different rule. The state says most electronics from homes can legally go in household trash, though it recommends recycling them. Businesses, schools, churches, and government offices can't landfill electronics that count as hazardous waste.
