Here Maryland Heights differs from many cities. Even on private property, like your driveway, a dumpster at a home needs a City permit.
The City's solid waste code requires a container permit for any container on or next to residential property. The permit lasts up to 30 days, and the building commissioner can extend it for another 30 days. The container has to sit wholly on your own property.
Streets are a different matter. A dumpster can't sit on a street, sidewalk or other public right-of-way unless the director of public works issues a special use permit. If a container breaks the rules, the City can order it removed within three working days.

Most household junk and building debris is fine to load. The limits come from Missouri's landfill rules and from the landfill that receives your load.
The Missouri Department of Natural Resources bans major appliances, whole tires, oil and lead-acid batteries from landfills. That means refrigerators, washers, water heaters, car batteries and old tires need to stay out of your container.
Asbestos needs special care. The state treats asbestos debris as a special waste, and some buildings must be inspected for it before a remodel or teardown. Beyond that, hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, and fuel can't go in a standard dumpster.
The City code also says you can't keep piling debris into a container that's already full, and construction waste must be secured so wind can't scatter it.
