Most household and building debris is fine. The limits come from Michigan's landfill rules.
Michigan's landfill prohibited materials list from the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy bans yard clippings, used oil, lead acid batteries, scrap tires, bulk liquids, empty drums, and returnable bottles and cans. Grass, leaves, sticks, and trimmings should go to a compost site instead. A landfill can only take tires that have been cut in half or shredded.
Hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, and asbestos can't go in a standard dumpster. Older floor tile and pipe insulation can contain asbestos, so have it tested before you tear it out.
