If the dumpster sits on private property, such as your driveway, yard, or a fenced job site, you usually won't need a City permit. The City of Detroit's residential guidelines say roll-off containers must be placed on your property.
Things change once the container moves into the public right-of-way. In Detroit, that means the street, the alley, the sidewalk, the curb, and the grass strip between the curb and the sidewalk. Putting a dumpster in any of those spots requires a Right of Way permit from the Department of Public Works, City Engineering Division.
The City lists a dumpster permit under its Right of Way permit types, and you apply through the City's online permit system. Contractors doing work in the right-of-way also need to be bonded with the City before work starts. Leave time for approval before your delivery date.

Most remodeling debris, household junk, and construction waste can go in a roll-off. The limits come from Michigan's landfill rules and from each landfill's own list of refused items.
Michigan's Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy keeps several items out of landfills. Its list includes yard clippings like grass, leaves, and brush, which should be composted instead. Used oil must be recycled. Lead acid car batteries go back to a store or repair shop, and scrap tires should be recycled where possible. Cans and bottles with a Michigan deposit should be returned for the refund.
On top of the state list, hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, and asbestos can't go in a standard dumpster. Empty drums need to be crushed first.
