Several things move the cost of a dumpster in Saginaw, and most of them are easy to plan for.

Picking a size starts with two questions: how much debris will the job make, and how heavy is it? Prime Dumpster rents containers from 10 to 40 yards.
The 10-Yard Dumpster fits a bathroom tear-out, a basement cleanup, or a small deck removal. It's also the size to choose for brick, block, or concrete, since heavy material reaches the weight limit before the container fills up.
The 15-Yard Dumpster handles a garage cleanout, carpet and pad removal from several rooms, or the roof on a garage or porch.
The 20-Yard Dumpster is the size many Saginaw homeowners pick for a full house cleanout or a remodel that spans a few rooms.
The 30-Yard Dumpster works for additions, large renovations, new home construction, and demolition that mixes lumber, drywall, and metal.
The 40-Yard Dumpster is our biggest container. It suits commercial builds, large demolition jobs, and big property or warehouse cleanouts.

You usually won't need a permit to keep a dumpster on private property in Saginaw, such as your driveway, side yard, or a fenced job site. A permit comes into play when the container blocks any part of the public right-of-way.
The City defines that area broadly. It generally runs from about the middle of the road to roughly three feet behind the sidewalk, so a container on the grass strip between the curb and the sidewalk still counts.
The Engineering Division of Public Works handles these permits. Its permits page lists a Barricade Permit for blocking a sidewalk or street, at $25 and good for 60 days. The City wants a drawing of the barricade setup with the application and 48 hours of notice before a street is blocked, so police and fire dispatch can be told. A separate Work Within Right of Way Permit covers other work on public ground, and its fees vary with the job.
Some city streets are also state highways, including Gratiot Avenue, Bay Street, and State Street. A container on one of those can need extra approval from the Michigan Department of Transportation.

Most of what comes out of a remodel or cleanout can go in your dumpster. The limits come from Michigan's landfill rules and from what the receiving site will take.
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy keeps a list of materials that can't be buried in a regular landfill. It includes asbestos, bulk liquids, used oil, lead acid car batteries, scrap tires, hazardous waste, medical waste, septage, and empty drums. Cans and bottles that carry a Michigan deposit are on the list as well, so return them to the store for your dime.
Yard clippings are barred from Michigan landfills too. Keep grass and leaves out of a dumpster that's headed for the landfill. The City's compost site takes brush and yard waste for a fee, as the next section explains.
Paint, solvents, fuel, and other chemicals can't go in a standard dumpster either. Mid Michigan Waste Authority holds free drop-off days for household hazardous waste from April through September for Saginaw County residents, by appointment at 989-781-9555.
For tires, the Saginaw County Mosquito Abatement Commission collects car and passenger truck tires from county residents each summer, up to 10 per property owner. Call 989-755-5751 for the dates.

Once your dumpster is picked up, the load is weighed and emptied at a licensed disposal site. The state lists one licensed landfill in Saginaw County for household and commercial waste. It's on Rathbun Road in Birch Run. The exact destination for any load depends on the hauler and the material inside.
The City also runs two drop-off sites of its own, mainly for residents with small loads. Both are listed on the City's trash and compost services page.
The City of Saginaw Compost Site, at 2410 Veterans Memorial Parkway, takes brush and yard waste for $14 per cubic yard. It's open April 1 through November 30, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., with Saturday morning hours on set weekends. Call 989-759-1663 before you go.
The City of Saginaw Convenience Station sits behind the Public Works building at 1435 South Washington Avenue. It opens only on the second Saturday of each month, from 8 a.m. to noon, and only for City residents with a Michigan license or ID. Each resident gets one drop-off a month, and roofing debris, shingles, and paint are turned away.
Those limits make the City sites handy for a pickup truck load, but not for a roof tear-off or a full renovation. Your account manager will confirm where your dumpster load is headed and walk you through the disposal fees before delivery.

The 10-yard dumpster has the lowest price, at $399 to $499. It's the right pick for small jobs, but heavy debris can use up its weight allowance fast. If you're tossing plaster, brick, or shingles, ask whether a separate load or a slightly larger size costs less overall.
Usually the same as five days. We price dumpsters by the job, not the calendar, so a shorter rental rarely lowers the bill. What changes the total is weight. Before delivery, ask your account manager how many tons are included and what each extra ton costs.
Most household and building debris is fine. That includes lumber, drywall, trim, cabinets, flooring, carpet, furniture, fixtures, and roofing. Scrap metal can usually go in too. Keep concrete and brick in their own load when you can, and check with your account manager on anything unusual before it goes in.
