Michigan's environmental agency, EGLE, keeps a list of materials that don't belong in landfills. Grass, leaves, and brush should be composted. Used motor oil has to be recycled, and car batteries go back to a store or repair shop. Scrap tires should also be recycled when possible.
The Marquette County Landfill adds its own refusals. It won't take medical waste, compost or other organic material, anything with refrigerant, toxic chemicals, or tires. Bringing those items can lead to fines.
