Most remodeling and cleanout debris can go right in. Michigan's landfill rules set the main limits.
State guidance on landfill-prohibited materials from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy lists what can't be buried. That includes deposit beverage containers, yard clippings, empty drums, lead-acid batteries, used oil, bulk liquids, medical waste, hazardous waste, and scrap tires. Asbestos needs special handling before any landfill takes it.
A few details help here. Tires can only be landfilled once they've been cut or shredded. Drums have to be full or crushed. Grass, leaves, and brush belong in a compost program instead of your dumpster.
Paint, solvents, fuel, and propane tanks don't belong in a standard dumpster either. Ottawa County runs a Resource Recovery Service Center at 6693 Roger Drive in Jenison that takes household hazardous waste from county residents.
Ask your account manager about anything you're not sure of before it goes in.
