The 10-Yard Dumpster is the smallest container we deliver and the one that fits a narrow city driveway. Use it for a bathroom, a shed teardown, or dense material like plaster, brick and concrete.
The 15-Yard Dumpster handles a garage, a porch, or carpet and flooring pulled out of a couple of rooms.
The 20-Yard Dumpster is the size most Kalamazoo homeowners pick. It clears a rental turnover or a kitchen remodel without dominating the driveway.

Set the container on private property, such as your driveway or a fenced job site, and the City asks for nothing. Move it toward the street and the rules change, because the right-of-way starts sooner than most people realize.
The City of Kalamazoo is unusually direct about this. Its right-of-way permit page names placing a dumpster at the street as one of the things that needs a Right-of-Way Permit, and it explains that the right-of-way usually reaches past the pavement to include the sidewalk and the curb lawn in between.
Applications should go in at least ten business days before you need approval, with plans and a traffic control plan when one applies. The City charges a permit fee, plus a late fee when work starts before the permit is issued, so it pays to file early. Applications go to the Stockbridge Facility at 415 E Stockbridge Avenue.

General building and cleanout debris is welcome. The limits come from Michigan law and from the receiving facility's own rules.
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy keeps yard clippings out of landfills, so grass, leaves, sticks and landscape trimmings have to be composted instead. Whole tires cannot be landfilled either unless they are cut or shredded first, and lead acid batteries belong back with the retailer or repair shop.
The state also requires bulk liquids from a business to be solidified before disposal, and drums have to be full or crushed. Asbestos has its own federal handling rules, and the receiving landfill decides whether it takes it at all.
Hazardous waste, paint, solvents and fuel never belong in a roll-off container. The City points residents with those materials to the Kalamazoo County Household Hazardous Waste Center instead.
Beverage containers with a Michigan deposit should go back to a retailer, and electronics need a recycler. When something has you guessing, ask your account manager before it goes in.

Drop-off runs Tuesday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday from noon to 6 p.m., and the second Saturday of most months from 8 a.m. to noon. Businesses need an appointment and paperwork first.
Just east of the city, the Comstock Township Transfer Station at 6604 East Main Street serves Township residents and turns away batteries, fuel tanks, gasoline, oil, refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and televisions.
