What Changes the Price in Seattle, WA

Seattle has some rules that other cities don't, and they affect your price.

Size is still the starting point. A container with room to spare costs less than a second haul.

Weight matters too. Wet roofing, plaster, and tile are heavy, and Seattle's rain can add weight to an open container.

Disposal is charged by the ton. The City's transfer stations charge $174 per ton for garbage, with a $37 minimum. Clean wood and yard waste cost less when they're kept separate.

The City also controls who hauls what. Construction debris headed for disposal must go through the City's contracted hauler, while recycling-only containers can come from any recycling company. Your account manager will confirm how this applies to your project before you book.

What Size Dumpster Do I Need in Seattle, WA?

Pick a size for both the volume and the weight of your debris. Prime Dumpster offers containers from 10 to 40 yards.

The 10-Yard Dumpster fits a bathroom remodel, a basement cleanout, or a small patio removal. It's the right size for concrete, brick, and soil.

The 15-Yard Dumpster works for a garage cleanout, a flooring job, or a roof on a small bungalow. It's a smart middle option.

The 20-Yard Dumpster is a common choice in Seattle for kitchen remodels and whole-house cleanouts. It holds cabinets, drywall, and furniture from several rooms.

The 30-Yard Dumpster suits big renovations, additions, and new townhouses. It handles jobs that mix lumber, siding, and roofing.

The 40-Yard Dumpster is our biggest container. It's made for commercial projects, demolition, and large cleanouts.

Your account manager can help you choose the size that fits your project.

Do I Need a Permit for a Dumpster in Seattle, WA?

A dumpster on private property, like your driveway, doesn't need a Street Use permit. Many Seattle homes have no driveway, though, so the parking lane is often the only spot.

The Seattle Department of Transportation says dumpsters in the public right-of-way need a Street Use permit before they're delivered. For home projects, the container should sit in a legal parking space in front of your property. It must be at least 30 feet from intersections, 10 feet from driveways, and 15 feet from fire hydrants.

You'll apply through the Seattle Services Portal with a simple site plan. Construction containers on busy arterial streets, or ones that close a sidewalk or lane, need a different construction permit. In paid parking areas, you'll also need a temporary No Parking Zone.

Call SDOT Street Use at 206-684-5253 with questions. Your account manager can help you figure out which permit applies and find the right contact.

What Can You Not Put in a Dumpster in Seattle, WA?

Most household and remodeling debris is allowed. Seattle adds its own disposal bans on top of the usual limits.

The City bans several construction materials from disposal. These include asphalt paving, brick, and concrete, as well as metal, cardboard, new gypsum scrap, and clean unpainted wood. If those materials are mixed with other waste, the load must go to a recycling facility the City has qualified.

Hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, and asbestos can't go in a standard dumpster either. The North Transfer Station doesn't accept household hazardous waste, but the City runs a separate hazardous waste drop-off on Stone Avenue North.

Bigger jobs have one more step. Demolition and remodels worth $75,000 or more must file a waste diversion report with Seattle Public Utilities. Ask your account manager about any item or rule you're unsure of.

Where Your Waste Goes

Seattle Public Utilities lists the sites that can take construction debris from Seattle jobs. For northeast Seattle, the closest City site is the North Transfer Station at 1350 N 34th St., Seattle, WA 98103, in Wallingford. It's open 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. seven days a week, with a later 10 a.m. start on the first Wednesday of each month.

The City's South Transfer Station at 130 South Kenyon Street, Seattle, WA 98108, also accepts construction debris. Mixed loads of recyclable materials may go to a qualified recycling facility instead.

The North station closes on Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day, and the Fourth of July. Your account manager will confirm where your load is going and explain the fees before delivery.

How Fast Can You Get a Dumpster in Seattle, WA?

Most Seattle rentals can be scheduled within one to two business days, with delivery arriving in a 24 to 48 hour window. If the container needs the street, give yourself extra time for the Street Use permit.

Tips before your container arrives:

  • Tell us what you're tossing. Concrete, wood, and metal may need to be kept separate under City rules.
  • Call early. Morning calls give you the best chance at a next-day slot.
  • Measure the spot. Check the distances from driveways, hydrants, and corners before delivery.
  • Get the permit first. Apply for your Street Use permit before you book the drop-off.
  • Tell us when you're done. Your account manager will line up a quick pickup.

Because the North Transfer Station is open every day, weekend pickups are often possible. The four holiday closures are the main exception.

Seattle, WA Dumpster Questions

How much does a dumpster rental cost in Seattle, WA?

In Seattle, dumpster rentals run from $399 to $499 for a 10-yard container up to $699 to $899 for a 40-yard, based on a five-day rental. Seattle's per-ton disposal fees and your debris weight shape the final price. Your account manager confirms included tonnage and overage rates when you book.

Is it cheaper to rent a dumpster or go to the dump?

For a single car or truck load, the transfer station's minimum charge makes self-hauling reasonable. A remodel is different. Many trips, traffic, and sorting rules add up fast, so one dumpster usually saves money and a lot of time.

Will a couch fit in a 10-yard dumpster?

Yes. A three-seat couch uses about one-fifth of a 10-yard dumpster. There's still room for a mattress, a bookshelf, and several boxes. Furniture runs out of space long before it reaches the weight limit.

When renting a dumpster, what can you not put in it?

Keep hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, and asbestos out. Seattle also bans concrete, brick, asphalt, metal, cardboard, new drywall scrap, and clean wood from disposal. Those items need to be recycled, so tell us about them when you book.

What is the cheapest dumpster I can rent in Seattle, WA?

The 10-yard dumpster is our lowest priced size, at $399 to $499. It's great for small jobs. Heavy debris can reach the weight limit quickly, and concrete must be recycled in Seattle, so a separate container for it often makes sense.

How much is it to rent a dumpster for 3 days?

A three-day rental usually costs the same as a five-day rental. We price by the job instead of by the day. Debris weight has a bigger effect on your bill than the number of days. Ask your account manager how much weight is included.

What can you legally put in a dumpster?

You can put household junk, furniture, carpet, painted or treated wood, roofing, and mixed remodeling debris in a Seattle dumpster. Recyclable materials like concrete, metal, and clean wood can go in a recycling container. Check with your account manager if you're unsure.
