The 10-Yard Dumpster handles one room at a time, like a gutted bathroom or a small basement cleanout. It's also the size to pick for plaster, brick, or broken concrete, since a short container keeps dense loads under the weight limit.
The 15-Yard Dumpster is a good middle step. It works for a packed two-car garage, a single layer of shingles on a modest roof, or pulling up flooring through the first floor.
The 20-Yard Dumpster is the one most Grand Rapids homeowners end up with. It fits a whole-house cleanout or a remodel that touches the kitchen, the bath, and a couple of bedrooms.
The 30-Yard Dumpster fits bigger jobs, such as an addition, a full gut renovation, or a new home going up. It has room for lumber, drywall, and packaging all at once.

When the dumpster stays on private property, like your driveway or a job site lot, you don't need a city permit. It's a different story once any part of it sits in the street, the parking lane, or on the sidewalk.
For that, the City of Grand Rapids requires a Temporary Occupancy Permit. The city lists dumpsters by name as one of the uses this permit covers. You apply online through the city's Citizen Access system or in person, and you pay the permit fee by card. The city says to expect a reply within one to two business days.
You'll need a certificate of insurance that names the City of Grand Rapids as additionally insured, with at least $500,000 in liability coverage and the project address on it. The good news is that a traffic control plan isn't required for a dumpster. If your spot has parking meters, those have to be reserved separately at least two business days ahead.
The Development Center handles these permits at 1120 Monroe Ave. NW, 3rd Floor. It's open Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and you can call 616-456-4100 with questions. Your account manager can help you work out whether your spot needs a permit and who should file it.
Most remodeling and cleanout debris is fine. The limits come from Michigan's landfill law, which Kent County posts in its prohibited items guide.
Michigan keeps a list of materials out of regular landfills. It includes asbestos, beverage containers with a deposit, yard clippings, empty drums, hazardous waste, bulk liquids, lead acid batteries, medical waste, scrap tires, and used oil. A few of these trip people up:
Yard clippings are the big one. Grass, leaves, and brush can only be landfilled when they're diseased, infested, or part of an invasive species cleanup. Everything else should be composted.
Tires can only go to a landfill after they've been cut in half or shredded. Whole tires need to come out of your load.
Used oil must be recycled in Michigan. Keep paint, solvents, fuel, and other chemicals out of the container as well.
If you're unsure about an item, ask your account manager before it goes in. Pulling it out later costs time and money.

Most dumpster loads from Grand Rapids end up at the South Kent Recycling & Waste Center, 10300 South Kent Drive, Byron Center, MI 49315. Kent County runs it, and it holds the only open, active municipal solid waste landfill in the county. It's open Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It's closed on Sunday. The county's landfill page warns that closing times are exact, and late arrivals can face an after-hours fee.
Kent County also runs the Waste-to-Energy Facility at 950 Market Avenue SW, Grand Rapids, MI 49503. It takes household trash from Grand Rapids and five nearby cities and turns it into electricity. The ash left over is buried at South Kent, so both sites lead back to the same county landfill.
For you, this means the county's per-ton fees apply to your load no matter which site takes it. Your account manager can confirm where your dumpster is headed and explain the fees before delivery.
