What Changes the Price in Newark, NJ

These are the biggest factors behind a Newark dumpster price.

Size comes first. A larger container costs more, but picking one that fits keeps you from overage fees or a second delivery.

Weight is next. Older Newark homes are full of plaster, lath, brick, and tile, and that debris is heavy. A gut job can reach the weight limit before the container is full, so tell us what the walls and floors are made of.

State taxes are built into every disposal fee. New Jersey charges a Recycling Tax of $3.00 per ton on solid waste accepted for disposal, on top of what the facility charges.

Street placement has a cost, too. If the container can't fit on your property, Newark requires a permit for each container on a City street. The details are below.

What Size Dumpster Do I Need in Newark, NJ?

The right size comes down to how much debris you'll have and how heavy it is. Prime Dumpster rents containers from 10 to 40 yards.

The 10-Yard Dumpster fits a gutted bathroom, a single room of plaster and lath, or a load of brick or concrete. Heavy debris like that reaches the weight limit before the container fills.

The 15-Yard Dumpster works for a basement or garage cleanout, a kitchen tear-out, or a small flat roof.

The 20-Yard Dumpster is a common choice in Newark for cleaning out a multi-family house or renovating several rooms at once.

The 30-Yard Dumpster covers full renovations, new construction, and teardowns with a large amount of mixed debris.

The 40-Yard Dumpster is our biggest size. It's used on commercial and industrial sites, large demolition jobs, and warehouse cleanouts.

Tell your account manager about the job, and they'll help you choose a size that fits both the debris and the space.

Do I Need a Permit for a Dumpster in Newark, NJ?

A container on private property, such as a driveway or a lot, doesn't need Newark's street permit. On many Newark blocks there's no driveway, though, and a container on the street or public right-of-way needs a permit.

Newark's container rules say no refuse container may be placed on a street or public right-of-way without a permit. The fee is $13 per container per location, and the applicant must also post a $1,250 annual deposit with the Central Permit Office to cover any street damage. If the container will stay 24 hours or less, the fee can be paid within 24 hours after placement, not counting weekends and holidays. For anything longer, the permit must be in hand before the container arrives.

The container must show its owner's name, address, and phone number and carry reflectors. The City can remove one that blocks a driveway or causes a traffic hazard.

For questions about the street, call the Department of Engineering at 973-733-8520. The office is in City Hall, Room 412. Your account manager can help you find the right City contact and sort out who files the permit.

What Can You Not Put in a Dumpster in Newark, NJ?

Most renovation and cleanout debris is fine for your container. New Jersey's rules set the main limits.

Electronics have been banned from the garbage in New Jersey since 2011 under the state's Electronic Waste Management Act. The Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority's disposal guide notes that TVs, computers, laptops, and monitors are covered. It also explains that whole tires can't go to landfills, since buried tires tend to work their way back to the surface.

Hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, gas cylinders, and asbestos can't go in a standard dumpster either. Keep them out and set electronics aside for recycling.

If you're not sure about an item, ask your account manager before you load it.

What Can I Throw in a Dumpster Rental?

*Approved items may vary by location. Always check your local laws and regulations to avoid any fines or additional fees.

Where Your Waste Goes

In New Jersey, each county decides which facilities may take its waste. In Essex County, that job belongs to the Essex County Utilities Authority. The authority's facility list shows that household trash from homes goes to the county's waste-to-energy plant in Newark.

Construction and demolition debris follows a different path. The same list names several transfer stations in Newark approved to take that type of waste, and the right one depends on what's in your container.

For small amounts of household trash, Newark Public Works runs four service centers: 61 Verona Avenue in the North Ward, 244 South 12th Street in the West Ward, 99 Earl Street in the South Ward, and 29 Waydell Street in the East Ward. They're open Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and take household trash, recycling, bulk items, mattresses, and yard waste. Call Public Works at 973-733-3644 with questions.

Your account manager will confirm where your load is going and explain the disposal fees before delivery.

How Fast Can You Get a Dumpster in Newark, NJ?

Most Newark dumpster rentals can be set up within one to two business days, with the container arriving in a 24 to 48 hour window. If it needs to stay on the street for more than a day, get the permit first.

A few tips for delivery day:

  • Describe the debris. Plaster, brick, and tile change the weight a lot, so tell us what's coming out.
  • Call early in the day. Next-day slots fill up, and a morning call gives you more choices.
  • Hold the space. On a busy street, keep the spot open so the truck can set the container down safely.
  • Plan the permit. For any stay longer than 24 hours on a City street, have the permit before delivery.
  • Schedule the swap or pickup. Let your account manager know when the container is full so they can book the next step.

If you're using a Public Works service center for small items, remember they close at 3:30 p.m. and stay closed on Sundays.

Newark, NJ Dumpster Questions

How much does a dumpster rental cost in Newark, NJ?

Newark dumpster rentals run from $399 to $499 for a 10-yard container up to $699 to $899 for a 40-yard container, based on a five-day rental. Heavy debris, disposal fees, and any street permit can add to the total. Your account manager confirms included tonnage and overage rates when you book.

Is it cheaper to rent a dumpster or go to the dump?

For most jobs, a dumpster is the better deal. The City's service centers are meant for household trash and bulk items, not a contractor's renovation debris. Hauling debris yourself also means disposal fees, fuel, and time on each trip, while one container handles the whole project.

Will a couch fit in a 10-yard dumpster?

Yes. A three-seat couch takes up roughly one-fifth of a 10-yard dumpster, leaving room for chairs, a mattress, and boxes. Furniture is bulky but light, so the space fills up well before the weight becomes an issue.

When renting a dumpster, what can you not put in it?

Keep hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, gas cylinders, and asbestos out of your Newark dumpster. New Jersey also bans TVs, computers, laptops, and monitors from the garbage, and whole tires can't go to landfills. Set those items aside and tell your account manager about them.

What is the cheapest dumpster I can rent in Newark, NJ?

The 10-yard dumpster has the lowest price, starting at $399 to $499. Your final cost still depends on weight. Plaster, brick, and tile can push a small container over its allowance, so keeping heavy debris in its own load can save you money.

How much is it to rent a dumpster for 3 days?

Most three-day rentals cost the same as our five-day rental, since we price by the job, not the day. Weight matters more to the bill than time. A Newark street permit is charged per container and location rather than per day, so ask your account manager what applies.

What can you legally put in a dumpster?

Most building and household debris is allowed, including lumber, drywall, plaster, tile, roofing, flooring, carpet, fixtures, furniture, and packaging. Brick and concrete are fine too but heavy, so mention them when you book. Your account manager can confirm any item you're unsure about.
