Four things decide what a container costs in Summit.

The 15-Yard Dumpster fits an attic or garage cleanout, a flooring tear-out, or a small roof, giving you real extra room for a small step up in price.
The 20-Yard Dumpster is the size most Summit homeowners choose for a full-house cleanout or a remodel that runs through a kitchen and a few other rooms.
The 30-Yard Dumpster takes on additions, whole-house renovations, new builds, and demolition that mixes lumber, drywall, and roofing.

If the container sits on private property, such as your driveway, Summit charges nothing for it. Once it moves onto a city street, you need the city's dumpster permit first.
Summit issues that permit through its Parking Services Agency, not the building department. According to the city's construction permits page, a dumpster in a metered space in the Central Retail Business District costs $40 per day, Sundays included, and a dumpster on a non-metered street costs a flat $40.
The request form needs a signature from the Summit Police Department Traffic Bureau before it goes to Parking Services. It also has to be turned in at least 48 hours before the work starts, with payment by cash, check, or credit card.
Parking Services is at City Hall, 512 Springfield Avenue, and you can reach the office at 908-522-5100. Your account manager can help you work out whether your spot needs the permit and who should file it.
Most renovation and cleanout debris is fine to load. The limits come from state recycling programs and from the rules at the receiving site.
Hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, and asbestos stay out of a standard container. Summit's own yard lists the same household hazards among the things it refuses: oil and latex paint, cleaners, pesticides, antifreeze, gasoline, kerosene, and thermostats. Union County holds collection days for those items, so set them aside.
Electronics have a free route. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection runs a program that recycles televisions, computers, monitors, laptops, printers, and fax machines at no charge, so there is no reason to toss them in a container.
Tires, refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, and propane tanks also need separate handling, so mention them when you book. If something on your list has you unsure, ask your account manager before it goes in.

Summit has two disposal sites that matter for a project, and only one of them takes a full container.
The Summit Municipal Transfer Station, at 40 New Providence Avenue, Summit, NJ 07901, serves registered Summit residents. It is open Tuesday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., and Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., and it is closed Sundays, Mondays, and holidays. Its regulations cap building materials at 40 gallons per trip and concrete, asphalt, block, and brick at two 20-gallon cans per load. Questions go to the Department of Community Services at 908-273-6404.
Those caps make the city yard a fit for leftovers, not a renovation. For bigger loads, the county's own disposal site is the Union County Resource Recovery Facility at 1499 Routes 1 & 9 North, Rahway, NJ 07065. The Union County Utilities Authority owns the plant, which can handle 1,540 tons of solid waste a day.
