Most renovation debris and household junk can go in a roll-off. Hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, and asbestos can't. Those need a licensed handler, not a container at the curb.
New Jersey also treats construction and demolition debris as its own waste type, and the transfer stations that take it are permitted for that material. Loads mixed with regular garbage or recyclables can cost more to process.
On big jobs, remember the City's recycling requirement. Because at least half the material has to be separated and recycled, it helps to keep clean wood, metal, and cardboard out of the mixed load.
Union City residents also separate recyclables at the curb, with cardboard flattened and tied and containers in clear bags or orange bins. Those items don't belong in a construction container either. If you're unsure about something, ask your account manager before it goes in.
