Most construction and household debris is allowed. Texas rules and the landfill's own list set the limits.
Texas keeps several items out of every permitted landfill, according to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. The list includes lead-acid batteries, used motor oil and oil filters, whole tires, liquid waste, regulated hazardous waste, and PCB waste. Refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners with refrigerant are banned as well, which catches old window units.
The Edinburg landfill turns away the same items, along with closed drums and untreated medical waste.
Paint, solvents, fuel, and asbestos can't go in a standard dumpster either.
Alamo residents can take some bulky items to the City's own roll-off at Public Works, but it refuses tires, batteries, hazardous waste, tile, concrete, Freon appliances, brush, and electronics.
If you're unsure about an item, check with your account manager before it goes in.
