The 15-Yard Dumpster fits a garage or attic cleanout, or carpet and pad from several rooms.
The 20-Yard Dumpster is a common choice for a South Minneapolis bungalow. It handles an average roof tear-off or a remodel that spans a few rooms.
The 30-Yard Dumpster takes a full-floor remodel in one haul. It needs a long, clear driveway, so check your space if your lot is served from an alley.

A dumpster on private property, like your driveway or a private lot, doesn't need a street permit in Minneapolis. A container in the street or public right-of-way is a different case.
Minneapolis spells this out clearly. The City requires a street use permit for any dumpster or storage container placed in the street. Only licensed contractors can apply, and the work must involve City-licensed solid waste haulers, wrecking contractors, or storage container companies. Permits come in 30, 60, and 90 day terms, the clock starts when the permit is issued, and Public Works must approve each one.
Applications go to Community Planning and Economic Development, Development Services, at 505 Fourth Ave. S., Room 220. The service center is open Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call 612-673-3000 with questions.
If the container also blocks a travel lane, sidewalk, or parking meter, Public Works handles a separate obstruction permit. That permit itself is free, though fees may apply for lane closures or hooded meters. The City asks for 24 hours' notice to hood meters and 48 hours' notice to post no-parking signs.

Most remodeling and cleanout debris is fine to load. The limits come from Minnesota law and from what disposal sites will accept.
Minnesota law bars yard waste from regular trash and from landfills in the metro area, and has since 1990. Leaves, grass, and branches need to go to a compost site instead of your dumpster.
Hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, and asbestos aren't allowed in a standard dumpster. Propane cylinders, pesticides, motor oil, and car batteries stay out as well. The City's own drop-off also refuses auto parts, dirt and sod, railroad ties, and items damaged in a house fire.
Appliances, electronics, mattresses, and tires are often charged by the piece, so mention them when you book.

The City runs the South Transfer Station at 2850 20th Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55407, open Tuesday through Friday, 12:30 to 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It's only for residents with City garbage or water service who haul their own loads, and those with City garbage service call Solid Waste and Recycling at 612-673-2917 to request a voucher. A roll-off container from a hauler doesn't go there.
Hauled roll-off loads go to transfer stations, debris recyclers, and landfills around the metro, based on what's in the container. The county says on its demolition waste page that about 70 percent of construction and demolition waste still ends up in landfills, while debris processing sites can recover about half of what they take in.
