Most remodeling and cleanout debris can go in your container. Minnesota law and the county landfill set the limits.
Minnesota bans several common items from the regular waste stream. Tires can't go to a landfill with the trash. Major appliances, such as refrigerators, washers, and water heaters, must be recycled instead. Old TVs and monitors with picture tubes are banned too, along with certain rechargeable and sealed batteries.
Hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, and asbestos stay out of a standard dumpster as well. The Clay County Landfill also won't take contaminated soil.
For household chemicals, Clay County runs a hazardous waste program at the Resource Recovery Center in Moorhead. It accepts material from Clay County households only, in the original containers, five gallons or smaller. Tires and appliances can go to the landfill as separate items for a per-piece fee.

Clay County owns and runs the landfill that serves Moorhead. Its landfill page lists the details.
The Clay County Landfill is at 3301 190th St. S., Hawley, MN 56549. It's open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with commercial hauling accepted from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. It also opens on the first and third Saturdays of the month from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Starting January 1, 2027, those Saturdays move to the second and fourth of the month. Two rules shape every load. All loads must be covered, and garbage and construction debris have to be sorted into different bins at the site. That's why keeping demolition debris apart from household junk can make your job simpler and cheaper.
